PC? Mac? PC? Mac? You're Not Likely to Go Wrong
By Bill Husted
Since it's likely a new computer user will have questions and problems, getting help is important. If you have a friend who is a wizard with Macs, get one. If your best friend is a genius with PCs, get one. (If you don't have any friends at all, forget about this computer stuff and get out more.)
Good artcile, exactly the advice I tend to give. I hate it when members of my family want help with their PCs (don't worry guys I will still help you!), I don't have a PC because I do not like to solve problems with them. The problems tend to be tough and there are very few reasonable resources out there. This is due to the high variety of PCs and to the unfriendly attitude of most PC Gurus. I prefer Macs, so if I'm your guru... get a Mac!

Eminem CD spotlights new piracy patterns. A database that can identify CDs placed into computer drives reveals the new Eminem album was a hit before it officially went on sale. [CNET News.com]
And everybody is sooo surprised. I saw A Beautiful Mind on a pirated DVD the other night in a friends house, Do you know where the copy came from? From the ones made to the Academy for the Oscar decision. How was the internet involved? It wasn't. Piracy is so low tech...

Over the weekend, Scoble, who now works at NEC, brought me one of their palmtop computers to try out. I have one immediate application for it, I want to put MP3s on the computer and listen to them on my daily walk. I also like the idea of listening to audio books. The setup sounded ideal. When you dock the palmtop, a folder shows up on the desktop. Any files you copy into the folder are copied to the palmtop. This is called ActiveSynch. So this morning I plugged it all in. It started out pretty well. A dialog popped up. New Hardware Found. Do I want to search for the driver. OK. Inserted the CD. It found it. Excellent. Install. Restart. I looked all over the place for the folder. Nowhere to be found. Opened setup.exe on the CD. It wants to install Outlook. I don't want Outlook. Scoble says I have to install it. Grrr. OK. Midway through the install it says it can't find a file. Do I want to Cancel. No. Can't find the file. Do I want to Cancel. No. Can't find the file. Do I want to Cancel. Yes. The first two letters of the activation code, ironically, are FQ. I should have had a clue what was coming. Postscript. Why did I think it would work if I did what the software told me to do? Because I was trained by the Macintosh where things like this just work. [Scripting News]

Terrible article on computer virus for Mac OS X. It is supposed to shatter the myth of mac security, but the only person saying there are viri for Macs works for Symantec, the anti-virus software provider. Teh only virus for Mac mentioned are Macro viruses (trivial to avoid). They also make a fuss about how the Mac can incubate virus for Windows... How is that our problem? Windows user should just buy virus detection, Mac users can wait, patiently until our platform is successful enough to entice virus writers and then we will see.

Handspring Counts on Duo of Treos. In a move analysts say will determine the company's survival, Handspring releases two new handheld devices. By Elisa Batista. [Wired News]
I think the Treo 90 is a bad name. They should have kept the Treo name for communicators and come up with another name for handhelds. Also, a handheld without a springboard option, makes Handspring promises look weak. Unless the Treo phones pick up Handspring will be in the toilet soon. I want the Treo 270, but I will wait for a $200-300 price point.
