Out of the U.S. and Out of Luck to Download Music Legally. Online music-selling services have far fewer restrictions than they used to, but they do not necessarily travel well. By Bob Tedeschi. [New York Times: Technology]
Not even The New York Times gets the story right. Apple didn't do anything. This guy reinitialized his computer, so he had to reauthorize it, and he tried to do it with a credit card from outside the US which you can't do. He was so dumb that he didn't even think to burn a CD to back up the songs! The fact that he has worked in computers and even in an enterprise competing with the iTunes Music Store, is not irrelevant it just emphasizes the stupidity of the guy.
