VAR Business, 7/8/02: Sherwin-Williams Repaints Systems
Paint retailer Sherwin-Williams is replacing its SCO Unix-equipped systems throughout its 2,500 stores with Linux. Under the multimillion-dollar deal, IBM Global Services will install roughly 9,700 M41 NetVista desktops, along with monitors, printers, cash drawers and related products. The new Turbolinux-equipped systems will run all store functions, including customer transactions, inventory and software applications used for paint mixing and tinting.

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates has promised for years how Windows will allow consumers to access "information at your fingertips."
With Longhorn, the next version of Windows due out in 2005, the company will take its first serious stab at delivering on Gates' vision. And a new application programming interface (API) framework, code-named Avalon, will be at the heart of Longhorn's new information-access architecture, according to sources.

New York Times, 7/11/02: Cubicle Crimes

DANVILLE, Calif. — Apparently, without anyone's noticing, our entire universe collapsed into a black hole and emerged in another dimension where everything is backward: Bill Gates (who used to be evil) is spending billions to vaccinate children in third-world countries, while the Catholic Church (which used to be good) is defending priests accused of molesting children. The stock market (which used to go up) now only drifts downward. And the surest way to lose respect is to mention you started a dot-com.
But here's the strangest backwardism of all: People seem surprised that captains of industry are stealing vast amounts of money at every opportunity. Back in our old dimension everyone assumed that C.E.O.'s and C.F.O.'s were weasels. Now it's big news.
