Computerwire, 6/27/02:  IBM Bundles Financing and Services for SMEs

In a bid to extend the reach of its $34bn IT services business into the small- and medium-sized business sector, IBM Corp has packaged together 20 managed services suites with financing.

The program is called "Manage It for Me" and is now being offered in the US, with a launch in the EMEA region scheduled for July.

Meta Group, 6/12/02:  CIOs Speak Out on Outsourcing

Our latest survey of 700+ CIOs indicates that outsourcing remains a significant portion of IT budgets (28% this year vs. 21% last year). Although saving money is always important for CIOs, the most frequently cited reasons for outsourcing were lack of internal expertise, lack of staff, and desire to increase focus on core IT competencies. Many CIOs were surprised at the "hidden costs" of outsourcing, such as those associated with planning, ongoing vendor relationship management, and lost opportunities.

Recent research has shown a willingness by organizations to adopt management service provider (MSP) services. Although this “market maturity” is a good sign, there is still a great deal of misinformation guiding organizations, and more education is necessary for companies to embrace the MSP model.

A recent META Group multiclient study (encompassing 300+ companies) has found that the MSP marketplace has begun to mature. Concurrently, the market remains confused on some key points (e.g., cost of services, differentiation from traditional outsourcing), indicating additional education is still required for companies to embrace MSP services as a viable option in place of, or in addition to, current service and technology offerings.

Stash those headphones and trash that file-swapping software: Companies are cracking down on employees who use streaming media and swap MP3s at work.

Companies increasingly are blocking access to Internet music and video at firewalls and are issuing sweeping initiatives that ban workplace media usage. The trend is a result of two developments: media usage hogging enormous amounts of corporate bandwidth and threats of legal liability as the entertainment industry aggressively pursues copyright scofflaws.

Infoworld, 6/25/02:  IBM aims wireless at smaller businesses

NEW YORK -- In an effort to speed the deployment of wireless networks within small and midsized businesses, IBM here on Tuesday unveiled four bundled wireless starter kits at the TechXNY trade show.

The plan is to make it fast and simple for smaller companies with limited IT staff to deploy wireless 802.11 LANs (local area networks), according to Big Blue officials. Wireless computer networks can allow organization to forego hard-wiring network, creating a shorter path toward productivity, according to industry experts.
