Gartner, 5/31/02:  Global Outsourcing: Financial Services Industry Options

As outsourcing in the financial services industry increases, it’s more important than ever to understand the different types of services available, and how regional considerations affect outsourcing decisions.

Outsourcing in the financial services industry is on the rise. Outsourcing business drivers have emerged that go beyond the financial impact of shared systems and their resulting economies of scale. These include speed-to-market and leveraging scarce or expensive IT resources. These factors are leading financial services providers (FSPs) to use external service providers (ESPs) that enable them to keep their focus on core competencies and separate strategic processes from commoditized, tactical efforts.

Press Release, 5/14/02:  Microsoft REJ Methodology Touted for Quantifying Value of IT Investments

PASADENA, Calif., May 14, 2002 -- The incessant blare of a fire alarm interrupted one of the first speakers last week at Microsoft’s second annual Business Value Summit. Though the Pasadena hotel eventually issued an all-clear notice, the unexpected interruption was appropriate for the task at hand.

The event gathered more than 200 IT executives, technology industry analysts and Microsoft employees to answer another type of alarm -- one that’s going off in many corporate boardrooms.

Giga, 5/29/02:  Recommendation for Upgrading From Windows 95

Rob Enderle

Given this Windows 95/98/NT base, there is only one OS we can recommend that might allow you to stay stable for the period you want and that is the current OS, in this case Windows XP Pro. (You may actually be able to use Windows XP Home edition instead to save money, but you may find that limits your options in the coming years.)

Infoworld, 5/31/02:  A title by any other name

THE DOT-COM ERA saw the growth of the CTO title, because Internet technology was so clearly entwined with the prevailing business model. Post-meltdown, CTOs are still in demand because corporate executives see wisdom in putting a visionary technologist in a top executive role. But is that role the domain of just the CTO? How does today's CTO differ from the traditional CIO? And where are the two titles headed?

The answers vary by industry and by company size and culture, according to executive recruiters Tom Berray and John Davis. InfoWorld editors asked Berray, who specializes in IT executive placements for Cabot Consultants in Tysons Corner, Va., and Davis, president of recruitment firm John Davis Associates in New York, to discuss where the CTO role is headed.

Giga, 6/3/02:  Quarterly PC Market and Vendor Update: Second Quarter 2002

Rob Enderle

The second quarter 2002 brings a new Hewlett-Packard (HP), no recovery for the PC segment and a new chipset from Intel. In addition, we have increasing concerns that IBM is sliding into serious trouble, Gateway has rolled out a new line but remains in the red financially,; and there are reports of fulfillment problems with Toshiba. In short, we continue through a year of disappointing news and vendor-driven technology changes. There is some good news though. The latest chipset from Intel, the 845GL, coupled with the new Celeron chip with the P4 core provides one of the better values in the market. However, AMD is rumored to be entering the corporate market with a more stable platform than Intel’s. The modular computer based on Transmeta and Toshiba technology has captured enough interest to be productized late this year.  Even ClearCube is gaining traction as bladed desktops appear to provide the best benefits of thin client and traditional PC capability for some. This means there is at least some light at the end of this tunnel, but getting there remains a challenge.
