Outsourcing is a subset of the storage market that never succeeded, but at LiveVault Corp., the sub-subset of data backup for mid-market customers is expanding, not contracting.

Until now, LiveVault only backed up user's individual servers, as co-branded services through Compaq Computer Corp. and Iron Mountain Inc., but tomorrow the Marlboro, Mass. company will announce back-up capability for network-attached storage (NAS) and servers in storage-area networks (SAN), President and CEO Bob Cramer and CTO Chris Midgley said.

Remote control software vendors generally fall into three categories: help desk software vendors, online meeting vendors and specialty e-support vendors. The products in each category are designed to meet specific needs and while all do offer the ability to see the contents of someone else’s desktop computer, not all remote control products are created equal. IT help desks should evaluate tools offered by their help desk vendor first.  PC hardware and software technical support desks, as well as broadband providers, are best served by niche e-support vendors. Customer service organizations interested in collaborative desktop sharing should evaluate products from their online meeting vendor.

c|net, 6/11/02:  IDC ups 2001 PC-shipment estimate

Research firm IDC has increased its estimate of the number of computers shipped in 2001, saying its earlier numbers were off because it undercounted computers sold by small "white box" manufacturers.

In 2001, 133.5 million desktops, notebooks and PC-based servers were shipped, rather than 125.5 million, as earlier stated by IDC. The 8 million-unit difference in items shipped comes from previously uncounted computers sold by white-box manufacturers, which generally sell to small organizations in limited geographic areas.
