Phil Zwieg, Northwestern Mutual's VP of IS, calls his company's relationship with Indian outsourcer InfoSys Technologies Ltd. "co-sourcing" rather than outsourcing. It better reflects the approach he's cultivating--building teams that combine IT staff from both companies. "We're totally focused toward operating that way," Zwieg says.

Until Sept. 11, Dexter Senft's associates in the fixed-income division of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. had no trouble finding the managing director when they needed him; they were all in the same office in downtown Manhattan.
But after their office was damaged by the terrorist attacks across the street at the World Trade Center, he and his co-workers scattered to 15 sites. Their efforts to reach Mr. Senft by cellphone were often frustrated because he was on another call, and they never knew when he would read his e-mail.
