Press Release, 9/12/02:  Pearson Inks Deal With IBM to Support Shared Computer Systems for Publishing Properties

NEW YORK & ARMONK, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 12, 2002--Pearson and IBM today announced a seven-year initiative that will speed the creation of a cross-enterprise computing platform that will support the needs of Pearson's publishing, information and education businesses.

The agreement -- which initially includes The Penguin Group and Pearson Education -- covers U.S. operations across thirty locations in eleven states.

c|net, 9/12/02:  Microsoft warns of thieving Word docs

A security flaw in Microsoft's flagship word processing software could allow a document to hijack files from any Windows PC on which it's opened, the software giant said Thursday.

A would-be thief would have to take extraordinary care in setting up the scenario, however, including knowing the exact location and name of the desired file as well as persuading the victim to open, modify, save and then return the Word document to the sender.

ZDNet, 9/13/02:  Microsoft Breakthrough:  Discovers First Use of  "Smiley"

A Microsoft researcher has apparently rediscovered the first known computerized instance of a "smiley," the combination of characters used to signify a smile in e-mail and on bulletin boards.

The smiley has spawned a whole range of emoticons, as they are now known, since its appearance on a bulletin board discussion at Carnegie Mellon University in 1982. Emoticons have become an important part of the worldwide online social culture because they make it easy to communication emotions quickly--something that many people find difficult to express using words.
