PC Market

Giga, 9/12/02:  Quarterly PC Vendor and Market Update: Third Quarter 2002

The market is likely to lose several more PC vendors before it recovers. Many believe IBM will be one of the first to exit; however, we do not. But this widely held belief will continue to hamper IBM’s ability to compete. Due to HP’s inability to market its merger-related accomplishments, it is likely to be seen as a failure, and this remains unfortunate given the progress that has been made. The life cycle of PCs will probably move from three to five years by mid-decade unless there is a substantial change in the way the vendors build and deploy PC technology.

Gartner, 9/13/02:  Services Fast 50 Short-Term Forecast: 2002 Outlook

In tough times, accurately forecasting short-term results is critical for planning. To aid IT services vendors in anticipating the immediate future, Gartner Dataquest has developed the "Services Fast 50" metric, which presents the quarterly revenue growth of 50 IT services companies. Projections through 2002 are included.

A seasonal decline in the first quarter was expected because it reflected the usual drop in spending following the end of the year —especially at companies where the calendar year coincides with the fiscal year, resulting in a "use it or lose it" attitude late in the year.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House's top cybersecurity adviser said on Tuesday that a much-anticipated plan to boost the nation's online defenses does not bow too much to the wishes of the high-tech industry.
