HEWLETT-PACKARD ON TUESDAY announced it has won a little more than $920 million in services contracts over the past few months fueled largely by helping build, integrate, and manage the IT infrastructures of larger companies looking to cut down on their costs and to respond quicker to marketing opportunities.

When President Bush signed the bill officially establishing the Department of Homeland Security, he put into motion the largest reorganization of the federal government since the post-World War II years. "The department will gather and focus all our efforts to face the challenge of cyberterrorism—and the even worse danger of nuclear, chemical, and biological terrorism," Bush said of the ambitious project.
The formation of the new department promises to spark immediate IT spending as it works to unite 170,000 employees from 22 agencies. The plan also looks to build a far-reaching federal, state, and local network infrastructure—based on the National Guard's 3,000-node, coast-to-coast network.

Computerworld, 12/3/02: Wall Street firms fined $8.25 million for e-mail violations

Five Wall Street brokerages, including Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs & Co. and Salomon Smith Barney Holdings Inc., agreed to pay a total of $8.25 million in fines for improperly storing e-mail communications during a three-year period, securities regulators said today.

Hoping to target all of those elusive business-class customers, Research In Motion (RIM) (Quote, Company Info) Tuesday took the wraps off a BlackBerry device that includes traditional Nextel (Quote, Company Info) Direct Connect walkie-talkie functions.
Similar to its previously launched BlackBerry 6710, the new 6510 handheld includes 2.5G wireless functions and support for J2ME and other open standards.
