Infoworld, 6/15/04: HP adds more tools to on-demand product line
User conference spotlights strategy, but Adaptive Enterprise is still a tough sell

Looking to buttress its on-demand computing strategy, Hewlett-Packard Co. this week plans to announce two OpenView management tools at a conference for users of its software products.
HP said one of the new tools can be used to measure the revenue companies lose when network or system components fail, and the other can help IT managers better pinpoint the cause of network problems. Both are due to ship next month.
The two products, which will be unveiled Tuesday at the HP Software Forum 2004 conference in Montreal, support the company's on-demand strategy, said Bill Emmett, chief solutions manager for management software at HP. He added that HP officials "absolutely see an upswing in terms of interest" among IT managers in the company's on-demand approach, which is called Adaptive Enterprise.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 15 - Hewlett-Packard has started a new campaign to sell wireless Internet technology to corporate offices and to help manage those systems.
The company's offering, which executives discussed Tuesday in an interview, underscores the trend of big technology companies getting into the business of servicing wireless network equipment as well as selling it, wireless industry executives said.
Hewlett-Packard said it signed a deal with Aruba Wireless Networks, a wireless start-up based in San Jose, Calif., that will provide the underlying technology to build and manage the wireless network.

John Patrick, former vice president of Internet technology at IBM and now president of the consulting organization Attitude LLC, shared his vision and told how the next steps of Internet evolution will come about.
Many of his expected changes are already arriving but can't surface until there are some sweeping changes to the Internet's framework, and -- more importantly -- to people's attitudes, Patrick said.

American worker bees of all stripes are eagerly latching onto a slew of new applications coming to their cell phones
Business users have long been the cellular industry's cash machine. And with the explosion in nifty content washing over the wireless world, that's not about to change. The biggest consumers of new applications such as video and e-commerce and location-based services will remain worker bees in American business. Enterprises small and large are expected to generate $3.2 billion in data revenue this year, more than two-thirds of the whole pot for this category, according to researcher Instat MDR. In five years, they'll produce 70% of all data revenue, or $18 billion.
