There's a wonderful thing that happens in orchestral recording sessions. I'm loading in some takes right now and am reminded of this. When someone in the orchestra has an extensive solo and the take goes to the end of the movement everyone in the orchestra stomps their feet on the floor. It's how they applaud their fellow musician while they hold their instruments in their hands.
This is something that folks in the biz take for granted I suppose. But I realize that it's not something everyone knows about since of course it is cut out of the CD during editing. It's a sign of the special bond that can exist within a group of orchestral players.
Of course it often happens when there's a guest soloist as well but it feels especially good when it's for a soloist from within the orchestra. They usually do the same job everyone else does. But with a solo they get to step forward and shine on their own.
I like my job. I guess it shows today!

Omigosh. I was just reminded of this. Works for Americans and the rest of us too!

Had a pleasant brunch at Sandy's restaurant today. Then downtown to drop off some films for development and buy mom's rather late birthday gift from Geoff and I.
Now at work (yes on a Saturday) re-editing a couple of re-mixed pieces from the Margison disc.

I've been wanting to go see Amélie for a while and finally went this evening with Chantale. Everyone should see it. It's hard to imagine anyone not really enjoying this film.
Utterly charming. Deliciously quirky. Great technique.
Makes you want to go to Paris. Makes you wish you could make your own film.
If you've seen the film, did you notice? . . . if you haven't listen for it . . . There's a scene where a voice over reads a letter which has been pieced together from other letters. Listen carefully to the voice over. It's stitched together as well. It's stilted and the background noise shifts. Brilliant. A tiny detail that few people will notice but those who do will take delight in.
