Observations From a Weblogger: "I n the last few weeks there has been a lot written, both online and in print, about blogs, journalism, etc. Here are some of my thoughts. "

Canadian art sets record-breaking price at auction. CBC Feb 26 2002 12:38PM ET [Moreover - moreover...]
I'm happy to see Canadian paintings go up in value but I wish they picked better paintings. This is a bit of a postcard and the previous record holder was a rather ugly, if famous painting.

tyro: Dictionary.com Word of the Day. tyro [Dictionary.com Word of the Day]
I do not recall ever hearing this word before. It's short and simple. I'm surprised it's not used more often. Of course now I'll start hearing it everywhere.

The feeling was back. That ugly creepy feeling I get up and down my spine when performing to an audience that just hasn't switched on.

I've tried to compare weblogs and blogging to everything from diaries to obituaries, none of the comparisons really holds up. Ofcourse it's just as hard to explain what smoking marijuana is like.

So here we are again, I know in my bones that Blogging is a major milestone for the web, media, journalism, communication and most importantly; people.

I find my weblog replacing my telephone more often. It is deeply rooted in my personal communications infrastructure among my family and friends. Just as the internet was when I was running a gopher server and soliciting email on-air in 1994.

The beauty of blogging saves me the humiliation of coming up emptyhanded. All I have to do is point to blogs and writing that encapsulates the weblog for me.

Links are the only true currency of the web. [Adam Curry: Adam Curry's Weblog]

Adam struggles to explain blogging and then comes up with the goods . . . via links to his own stories and others.

A sampling of messages of congratulations to Team Canada from around the world.

PC Magazine's iMac review gives the computer a positive rating (and wonders how many converts it will win):
"If the crowd in our labs is any indication, Apple has a success on its hands with the new iMac. Even jaded veterans of the platform wars stopped by to admire the machine's innovative design, attractive hardware complement, and excellent software bundle."

TidBITS: Copyright: Who Should Benefit?: " Intellectual Property Ecosystem -- Clearly something has to change, and the legislative approach of criminalizing increasingly common and profit-free behavior by individuals doesn't cut it. It's not that I believe recognizing and rewarding content creation is bad - I've based my entire professional life on it"
Adam's essay includes discussion of recent developments in the music industry. He published for free on the internet for years but maganes to make his living as a writer. How? By selling printed books to a very large audience he's attracted through his online work.

Mac OS X: Breeds of Programs, Part 3 (25-Feb-2002; 10.2K) [TidBITS] An Embarrassment of Riches -- It's ironic: Mac OS X includes the Classic environment for running existing Mac OS 9 applications, Carbon for developers who are porting large code bases over to Mac OS X, and Cocoa for programmers starting from scratch. Then there are Mac OS X's full Unix underpinnings and robust Java Virtual Machine, which together bring a veritable host of Unix and Java applications into the fold. With Mac OS X, the Macintosh has jumped from being known as a closed and isolated architecture to supporting far more programming environments than any other operating system. Who'd have thought?
