The Register - Deep inside Apple's Piles 'Piles are an Apple invention , now patented, that allow users to browse and organize documents by their semantic content. They were developed by Gitta Salomon and her colleagues at Apple's Advanced Technology Human Interface Group and announced to the world at the CHI conference in May 1992.'

Montreal Gazette - Story - canada.com network 'Deborah Wolfe, a Canadian citizen who was just breast-feeding her son and changing his diaper while en route between Houston and Vancouver, says her "subversive" actions led to her being threatened with detainment, RCMP involvement and legal charges for terrorist action against a U.S. citizen in international airspace while on an American flight during a time of war.'

BBC NEWS | World | Americas | WHO adamant over Canada Sars 'Toronto has won backing from the US Centres for Disease Control for its handling of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.

It is fighting for its reputation and its economic health after the WHO warning put the city virtually off limits for many travellers.'

Have a look at the photos. The first one is misleading. It shows an empty counter but this is in fact a half redesigned Union Station. It looks like a huge open space but all that's there is one car rental booth and we're at a train station for heaven's sake. But the other pics are fine. They are of individuals on the street in TO who basically say 'get a grip . . . this thing isn't out of control'.

Judge: File-swapping tools are legal
A federal judge in Los Angeles hands a stunning court victory to file-swapping services Streamcast and Grokster, dismissing much of the studios' lawsuits against them. [CNET News.com]
Excellent. I'm not in favour of stealing music but the meda companies have got to find another way to deal with this.

'Maybe this is the kind of thinking that led to the virtual tie between Bush and Gore in the last election. And forgive me, it's probably what led to the war in Iraq, which looks more and more insipidly stupid every day that we don't discover a huge stockpile of WoMD. Maybe we'll find them later, but our leaders told us they knew they had them. I think we know now, for sure, that was a lie.' [Scripting News]

Reuters | Latest Financial News / Full News Coverage 'Label sources say the service is an a la carte download store -- not unlike that of rival Liquid Audio -- that is built into Apple's iTunes player. No subscription is required for the service, and tracks are expected to retail for an average of 99 cents. Once purchased, tracks are transferred to the consumer's iTunes music library and are automatically synched to the user's iPod portable player. Content can also be burned to CD.' [MacInTouch]

WSJ: Apple signs Eagles, No Doubt for music service 'The popular 70's rock band has been a holdout for other legitimate digital music services that have asked to include the band's catalog in their libraries. Irving Azoff, the Eagle's manager, said that he hasn't liked other online services, but he liked Apple's.'
Apple as record label? Let's hope not. Still, Monday is going to be very interesting.

Blair's secret war meetings with Clinton
Politics: Tony Blair took repeated secret advice from former US president Bill Clinton on how to unlock the diplomatic impasse between Europe and the US. [Guardian Unlimited]
Interesting. I remember reading an op-ed by Clinton around this time in which he suggested that people listen to Blair. Obviously there was lots going on behind the scenes. I'll bet this news will tick off the Republicans. Good.

Dyke strikes out at US media
Media: The BBC director general warns the government not to allow the "Americanisation" of the British media. [Guardian Unlimited] '"We are genuinely shocked when we discover that the largest radio group in the United States was using its airwaves to organise pro-war rallies," said Mr Dyke, who is also the BBC's editor-in-chief. "We are even more shocked to discover that the same group wants to become a big radio player in the UK."

In the communications bill currently going through the House of Lords, the government plans to deregulate ownership laws, allowing foreign companies like Clear Channel to own commercial radio licences in Britain.'

Habla usted Clear Channel?
If the FCC allows the two biggest Spanish-language media companies in the U.S. to merge, it'll create a media conglomerate that will dwarf all competitors -- and could help GOP-friendly radio titan Clear Channel deliver Hispanic votes for Bush in '04. [Salon]

A Pianist Calls Attention to Vivid Contrasts in Style
The Canadian pianist focused on Beethoven's late piano music at the Weill Recital Hall on Wednesday, making it sound forward-looking and radical. [New York Times: Arts] 'For the opening of her Weill Recital Hall debut program on Wednesday night, the Canadian pianist Katherine Chi chose to emphasize the latter aspect of the composer's giant "Hammerklavier" Sonata (Op. 106), making it sound forward-looking and radical. Disjunction was favored over connection, turbulence over smoothness, strangeness over familiarity.'
