Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | UN heads for new rift over Iraq role 'The Bush administration is preparing a draft security council resolution that would reduce the United Nations to a marginal role advising the US on running Iraq until the creation of a new government, diplomats and administration officials said yesterday.

The document is likely to provoke another serious split in the security council when it is presented, as early as next week. It represents another defeat for Tony Blair and his attempt to push the US towards a more multilateral approach to solving postwar problems.'

When is Blair going to realize that he's in bed with people who have only their own interests in mind?

The Globe and Mail-The collateral damage of SARS 'Three patients scheduled to undergo liver transplants from live donors died when a Toronto hospital had to put its program on hold during the height of the SARS outbreak. [...] Though the tallies differ, there is one thing those in health care can agree on: The financial fallout of the SARS outbreak may be staggering, but even more devastating is the loss of life and missed opportunities.'

.< 3:42:16 PM >

The Globe and Mail 'An error-laced performance by Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman on CNN, which was supposed to repair the city's SARS-tainted reputation, provoked criticism, embarrassment, laughter -- and some long sighs -- at home and abroad yesterday.'
Yikes. What a clown. It's bad enough when we see this in Toronto. It's worse when he gets a national stage (he called in the army when a big snow storm hit). But now he's humiliating us in front of many more people.

The Globe and Mail: SARS according to Mayor Mel
A transcript of Lastman's interview on CNN along with a number corrections from the Globe.

CBC News: Ammo dump blast kills 6 in Baghdad 'U.S. soldiers claim the blast was triggered by unknown attackers firing flares into the munitions, while Iraqis say the U.S. started one explosion which then got out of hand.'

.< 3:24:07 PM >

CBC News: SARS claims 3 more victims in Toronto ' There have been no new probable cases of SARS in the Toronto area since April 9, with the exception of a few health-care workers at hospitals, according to D'Cunha.'

.< 3:21:21 PM >

CBC News: Canada to train Iraqi police, judges: U.S. ambassador ' The federal foreign affairs minister stresses Canada's primary role will be humanitarian. "Our principal object is to help the Iraqi people, to get them on their feet, from a humanitarian point of view," said Bill Graham. Canadian official are also hoping to help in the area of governance and perhaps push the merits of federalism.'

Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | Thanks, Mr President 'Love him or hate him, but at least acknowledge the fact that President Bush has a knack for bringing the most unlikely people together. Could anyone have imagined that Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims - historic foes for centuries - would unite in a Baghdad mosque to oppose US occupation of their land and vow to work hand in hand to remove the infidels from their ancestral ground? Equally impressive, President Bush's Iraq policy has helped millions of Europeans, who often find themselves at odds with each other on the most banal considerations of life, to find their common identity in opposition to the war.'

.< 1:03:49 AM >

Guardian Unlimited Politics | Special Reports | When Blair stood on the brink 'Jack Straw, the foreign secretary, told the Guardian that he intended to resign if the vote went against the government. The home secretary, David Blunkett, also said that cabinet ministers close to Mr Blair would "go down with him". The prime minister revealed last week that he had told his family he might be forced to quit over Iraq.'

In Afghanistan, Violence Stalls Renewal Effort 'Rafael Robillard, the director of a coordinating body of international aid agencies in Kabul, summed up the frustration of many aid workers. "I was talking to one civil affairs guy, and we were looking at a kindergarten the American military was building, and the soldier turned to me and said, `Why aren't you guys doing anything about disarmament?' I could not believe it. The military is building kindergartens, and they are asking me, a civilian aid worker, to do disarmament! The world is upside down."'

John Palfrey : Grokster opinion: quick reads on some good news '* I was particularly interested in the line that says that "additional legislative guidance may be well-counseled."  (p. 33 of 34)  Judges are funny, aren't they?  Read: please make some sensible law in this area and resolve the mess we've gotten ourselves in.'
