Allies divided over battle for hearts and minds
Iraq: British military critical of US troops' heavy-handed style with civilians. [Guardian Unlimited] 'What is striking is the emphasis senior British military figures are placing on the differences between their approach and that of the Americans on the ground. They have gone out of their way to draw attention to nervous, "trigger-happy" US soldiers.'

Why are we not surprised? The article says that the Brits are becoming concerned that the US will leave Iraq as soon as possible and leave them behind to handle the peace keeping. This is a situation into which I expect Canada will be happy to send their troops. We are peace keepers and we have lots of experience doing that kind of work.

The Observer | Business | US arms trader to run Iraq 'Garner's business background is causing serious concerns at the United Nations and among aid agencies, who are already opposed to US administration of Iraq if it comes outside UN authority, and who say appointment of an American linked to the arms trade is the 'worst case scenario' for running the country after the war.'
Morons. Maybe they could get another disinterested party like Rumsfeld or Wolfowitz to run the country.

"What Does a "Thumbs Up" Mean in...
"What Does a "Thumbs Up" Mean in Iraq? By Brendan I. Koerner" [Daypop Top 40] 'Iraqis are giving passing Americans the "thumbs up" sign, which the troops interpret as a symbol of support. But many veteran travelers insist that the gesture is a crass Middle Eastern insult.'

US soldiers in Iraq asked to pray...
US soldiers in Iraq asked to pray for Bush. 30/3/2003. ABC News Online [Daypop Top 40]
Religious fundamentalists. They're a dangerous lot.

Big Brother Is Watching You Shop
Commercial databases, such as credit card records, grocery purchases and hotel bills, are the latest pool of information the government says it has a right to collect. Merchants and lenders have been doing it for years. [Wired News]
That would be the US government. Home of the free and the brave?

Hackers Condemn Arab Site Hack
It's clear that Al-Jazeera's website was hacked. But hackers frown on people misusing their limited computer skills, calling them bullies and identifying them as crackers or script kiddies. By Michelle Delio. [Wired News]

AP: "NBC fired journalist Peter Arnett on Monday, saying it was wrong for him to give an interview with state-run Iraqi TV saying that the American-led coalition's first war plan had failed because of Iraq's resistance. Arnett himself called the interview a 'misjudgment.'" [Scripting News]
This after NBC had released a statement supporting Arnett's interview.

BBC NEWS | UK | Troops' anger over US 'friendly fire' 'One of the survivors criticised the US pilot for showing "no regard for human life" and accused him of being "a cowboy" who had "gone out on a jolly". Another survivor said he stumbled out of the burning wreckage of his light tank and waved frantically to the American pilot to try to halt his second attack.'
US pilot kills 1 British soldiers, wounds 3 others. Still no mention of the story on cnn.com's home page. A search for 'British soldier killed friendly fire' turns up no mention on the entire site.

Suicide bombers 'arrive in Iraq'
The Palestinian group Islamic Jihad says the first wave of volunteer 'martyrs' have arrived in Iraq. [BBC News | World | UK Edition]
If you call it a war on terrorism I guess you shouldn't be surprised to encounter terrorists.

BBC NEWS | Business | Halliburton out of Iraq rebuild 'The USAID official did not say whether Halliburton's bid was uncompetitive, if it withdrew voluntarily or was asked by the government to do so.

Halliburton's subsidiary Kellogg Brown and Root (KBR) was last week awarded a US government contract, without a competitive tender, to put out oil well fires in Iraq.

Mr Cheney ran Halliburton for five years until 2000.

The US policy of awarding contracts only to US companies has drawn sharp criticism from overseas governments and companies. [...] USAID has awarded a $4.8m to rebuild Iraq's only deep water port, which is under British military control, to US company Stevedoring Services of America.

The British would like it returned to Iraqi control as a goodwill gesture.'

Back Off, Syria and Iran! 'Rummy was beginning to erase his fingerprints. "The war plan," he said, "is Tom Franks's war plan." Tommy, we hardly knew ye. Paul Wolfowitz, Rummy's deputy, conceded that the war planners may have underestimated the hardiness of the heartless Iraqi fighters. This admission is galling. You can't pound the drums for war by saying Saddam is Hitler and then act surprised when he proves ruthless on the battlefield.'

Quotes of the Times The best thing Maureen Dowd has written in years:  "We're stunned to discover that the local population treats our well-armed high-tech troops like invaders. Why is all this a surprise again? I know our hawks avoided serving in Vietnam, but didn't they, like, read about it?"

Garry Wills: "Bush has been very good at fooling the American people into thinking that Saddam Hussein was behind the attack on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington."

Accuracy in Media 15... 15 mistakes already made by the media in reporting the war in Iraq, as tallied by Greg Mitchell in Editor & Publisher (via Lex Alexander). By my count, 14 of these misreported facts reflect favorably upon the US military effort and/or would serve as useful misinformation for our side. Damn liberal media, piling on with the bad news...< [EdCone.com]

British soldiers condemn US pilot
Injured soldiers hit out at 'cowboy' pilot involved in friendly fire incident. [Guardian Unlimited] But the crews of the two British forward reconnaissance Scimitars which were attacked by the A-10 could not contain their anger. Lance Corporal of Horse Steven Gerrard, speaking from his bed on the RFA Argus in the Gulf, said: "I can command my vehicle. I can keep it from being attacked. What I have not been trained to do is look over my shoulder to see whether an American is shooting at me." He said: "There was a boy of about 12 years old. He was no more than 20 metres away when the Yank opened up. "He had absolutely no regard for human life. I believe he was a cowboy. There were four or five that I noticed earlier and this one had broken off and was on his own when he attacked us. He'd just gone out on a jolly." He added: "I'm curious about what's going to happen to the pilot. "He's killed one of my friends and he's killed him on the second run."
We Canucks know a thing or two about those cowboys.
