Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | US may go it alone as Blair is caught in diplomatic deadlock 'Mr Rumsfeld's remarks provoked a mixture of panic and fury in Downing Street and the Ministry of Defence last night. After frantic telephone calls between Mr Rumsfeld and Mr Hoon, the Pentagon issued a clarification of Mr Rumsfeld's remarks, although there was no retraction.'

The stunning incompetence of the Bush on display once again.

DesMoinesRegister.com | News "The greatest position of strength is by exercising the best judgement in the pursuit of diplomacy," he said, "not in some trumped-up, so-called coalition of the bribed, the coerced, the bought and the extorted, but in a genuine coalition."

Guardian Unlimited Money | Work | Why aren't we taking our time? 'In the first of her columns for Guardian Unlimited on the importance of achieving a work-life balance, Madeleine Bunting asks why, in a culture where relationships are sidelined as we work ridiculously long hours to further the companies who employ us, we are so afraid to take time out.'
This is a great article. I should read it to myself once a week. So far this year I have been much more in control of my time. It feels good.

Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | US firms set for postwar contracts 'Halliburton, one of the companies in the running for the deals, was headed by the US vice-president Dick Cheney between 1995 and 2000. Halliburton has already been awarded a lucrative contract, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, to resurrect the Iraqi oilfields if there is a war.

Other companies have strong ties to the US administration, including the construction giant Bechtel, the Fluor Corporation, and the Louis Berger Group, which is presently involved in the reconstruction of Afghanistan.'

U.S. willing to extend March 17 Iraq
The countries backing a UN resolution potentially authorizing an attack on Iraq are willing to give the country a little more time to prove it's disarming. F U L L   S T O R Y
[CBC News]

Pretty soon the Canadian compromise (the one W was so dismissive of) is going to be looking like a missed opportunity for the 'war party'.

Smart text highlighting in Safari
In Safari, you can highlight text using traditional click-drag selection method. But there is one more way of highlighting text in Safari! [macosxhints]
Apparently this is a long-time UI in the Mac OS. But it's nice to have reminders of these things, particulalry for those of us who have either forgotten about them or never new they existed.

Intel procures more partners for hot spots | CNET News.com 'On Tuesday, the list of companies teaming with Intel to help promote "hot spots" for wireless Internet access grew by three: Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Borders Group and McDonald's.'
My goodness. We are going mainstream.

Apple iMac - the PC you really want, says MSN
Un-subedited testimonials... [The Register] 'Hats off to Apple Canada, which as far as we can make out appears to have pulled off a small but embarrassing heist at the expense of the local version of the Microsoft Network (MSN). The stunt would seem (naturally, we conjecture) to have taken advantage of the collision between MSN's thirst for ad revenue and what some might call the dubious presentation of advertising material undifferentiated from editorial.'

FireWire reports highlight a serious...
FireWire reports highlight a serious problem that has gotten little attention in the past: it's apparently all too easy to damage FireWire ports by simply "hot-plugging" devices, a touted feature of the technology.

Times Online 'The former President?s comments reflect unease among the Bush family and its entourage at the way that George W. Bush is ignoring international opinion and overriding the institutions that his father sought to uphold. Mr Bush Sr is a former US Ambassador to the UN and comes from a family steeped in multi-lateralist traditions.'

US public turns to Europe for news 'The American public is apparently turning away from the mostly US-centric American media in search of unbiased reporting and other points of views. Much of the US media's reaction to France and Germany's intransigence on the Iraqi war issue has verged on the xenophobic, even in the so-called 'respectable' press.'
Lieing to your viewers is bad for business. This is a European report. I'll bet US traffic to the CBC's news sites has grown as well. The news items can be a bit brief (someone told them web readers like it that way?) but the in-depth reporting is excellent.

Just War %u2014 or a Just War? 'Profound changes have been taking place in American foreign policy, reversing consistent bipartisan commitments that for more than two centuries have earned our nation greatness. These commitments have been predicated on basic religious principles, respect for international law, and alliances that resulted in wise decisions and mutual restraint. Our apparent determination to launch a war against Iraq, without international support, is a violation of these premises.'
Nobel Peace Prize winner and former US president Jimmy Carter speaks out. Here is a man with credibility.

CBC News - When Saddam was a good guy ' The documents show conclusively the U.S. knew as early as 1983 that Iraq was using chemical weapons against Iranian troops, and that Saddam was buying chemicals from American interests. But it was inconvenient intelligence. Washington had just removed Iraq from a list of states sponsoring terror, and wanted it to win the war with Iran. That was clearly the overriding concern.'
This is part of a report which Neil McDonald filed tonight on The National. The US government aided and abetted Saddam in getting his hands on chemical weapons and its best to make sure the UN didn't find out about it. These are the weapons Saddam so famously used on his own citizens.
