When a Gun Is More Than a Gun
The U.S. military is shrinking thermobaric bombs -- which light the surrounding air on fire and asphyxiate those left in the flames' wake -- so they can be shot out of rifles. It's a fearsome amount of firepower to give to individual soldiers. By Noah Shachtman. [Wired News]

At the latest venue meant to attract display investors, Matt Medeiros, former head of Philips Electronics' Components Division, said there are only two technologies worthy of investment: displays and wireless. "These two technologies will serve as the basis for inputting and outputting all future information," Medeiros told investors. [Tomalak's Realm]
And Philips is talking about combining the two.

I love a company with a sense of humour . . . and one that would turn it's home page over to a congratulatory note to Nobel Prize winner Jimmy Carter . . . a nice slap in the face of 'the war party'.

US launches huge attack on Iraq
US-led forces begin what appears to be a sustained ground assault on Iraq, as a fresh wave of air strikes rocks the capital, Baghdad. [BBC News | World | UK Edition] 'At a news conference, US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld threatened military action of "a force and scope and scale beyond what has been seen before". '
All of this to kill one guy.

CBC News: Security Council members blast U.S. for strikes on Baghdad ' Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev called the attack a major mistake and said it seemed the U.S. is trying to make the world its own province. "It will do tremendous damage to international relations and to world security," he said. '

Red Alert? You are the enemy
If the nation escalates to "red alert," which is the highest in the color-coded readiness against terror, you will be assumed by authorities to be the enemy if you so much as venture outside your home, the state's anti-terror czar says. (link)Awhile ago, I downloaded a set of images called the Homeland Security BS Advisory System. For threat level red, it says "Constitution repealed, totalitarian state established". I thought that was a joke.

CBC News: PMO silent but Liberal cabinet minister says Bush 'let down' the world 'It came at a time when Liberal MPs rallied around Prime Minister Jean Chrétien and his decision that Canadian forces will not join the U.S. in the war. Back to Iraq 2.0: Meanwhile, back at the War on Terror 'But there's been another casualty in the War on Terror: Rand Beers, the National Security Council official in charge of the war on terror resigned this week. While a spokesman for the NSC said it was for personal reasons, various sources in the intelligence community say there is widespread worry that Iraq is hurting the terror war. "Hardly a surprise," said one former intelligence official. "We have sacrificed a war on terror for a war with Iraq. I don't blame Randy at all. This just reflects the widespread thought that the war on terror is being set aside for the war with Iraq at the expense of our military and intel resources and the relationships with our allies."'

.< 1:35:00 AM >

Where is Raed ? 'What is bringing on this rant is the question that has been bugging for days now: how could "support democracy in Iraq" become to mean "bomb the hell out of Iraq"? why did it end up that democracy won't happen unless we go thru war? Nobody minded an un-democratic Iraq for a very long time, now people have decided to bomb us to democracy? Well, thank you! how thoughtful.'
Extraordinary. A weblog from Bagdhad. Turn off CNN and read what's really happening.

A Vintage Palmtop Holds Users in Thrall
WHEN Victor Rehorst pulls out his oversize personal digital assistant, there is often someone with a question. "They usually ask, what kind of a Palm is that?" Mr. Rehorst said. [New York Times: Technology] 'The answer is that Mr. Rehorst's computer is not a Palm at all. Mr. Rehorst, 22, who works in the information technology department of a bank in Toronto, is among the enthusiasts who continue to use the Apple Newton, a hand-held that was abandoned by its manufacturer just over five years ago.'
