Bush's tax cuts slashed
Business: The US senate ripped a hole in President Bush's economic revival plan yesterday by reducing his $726bn of proposed tax cuts to $350bn amid growing worries about the cost of war. [Guardian Unlimited]

Attempting to save the country from the president.

Guardian Unlimited Film | Features | No standing on ceremony 'One journalist asked Moore whether he thought he was now going to be blacklisted in Hollywood, to which he replied: "I don't work in Hollywood. I'm funded by Canadians and others who don't live here, but it was Hollywood who voted for this award."'

Blair pleads for US and Europe to end rift over Iraq
Politics: Tony Blair yesterday pleaded with Europe and the US to heal their rift over Iraq to prevent a bipolar rivalry which would be disastrous for world stability. [Guardian Unlimited]
It's pretty straight forward actually. Just stop invading countries unprovoked and on false pretenses and we'll all kiss and make up.

"The first contracts for rebuilding post-war Iraq...
"The first contracts for rebuilding post-war Iraq have been awarded, and Vice President Dick Cheney's old employer, Halliburton Co., is one of the early winners." [Daypop Top 40]
Gosh. What a surprise. Americans' tax dollars at work again.

CBC News: U.S. ambassador rebukes Ottawa for lack of support ' The ambassador said if there were ever a real threat to Canadian security the U.S, would be there to help. "There is no security threat to Canada that the United States would not be ready, willing and able to help with. There would be no debate, there would be no hesitation. We would be there for Canada ? part of our family," he said.'
Uh, yeah but that's just it Mr. Cellucci. Iraq does not pose a 'real threat' to the US. That's why almost no one else in the world is supporting you in this war.

U.S. EBay Seller Refuses Canucks
A Georgia computer vendor won't honor an online auction sale to a buyer from British Columbia, citing Canada's lack of support for the war in Iraq. Who knew buying a laser printer could be such a politically charged event? Charles Mandel reports from Vancouver. [Wired News] "If they're going to do that,'' Ingram said, "then they shouldn't sell to the 50 percent of Democrats and the 20 percent of Republicans that aren't supporting the war, either."
CompAtlanta used the immortal words of their brainy president 'You're either with us, or against us.'

Government Executive Magazine - Letter of Resignation [Daypop] 'I have served my country for almost thirty years in the some of the most isolated and dangerous parts of the world. I want to continue to serve America. However, I do not believe in the policies of this Administration and cannot defend or implement them. It is with heavy heart that I must end my service to America and therefore resign due to the Administration?s policies.'
There are links to other letters of resignation on this page. The Bush administration has no credibility, even among its own people.

On propoganda, big-pub news and editorial integrity in wartime
But what it does do is bring a human face into public view -- the face of an average person who happens to be on the other side of the walls of the Pentagon propoganda machine. It takes us out of our videogame mentality with our animated 3-D maps, rendered helicopters and tanks, and night-vision-enhanced smart-bomb footage. Hopefully it gives us a glimpse into the real human reprecussions of what's going on. [Jake's Radio 'Blog]
Jake nails the importance of the Baghdad blogger.

CBC News: $75 billion for first month of war 'Twelve years ago, during the first Gulf War, Germany, Japan and Saudi Arabia paid just about all the bills. This time around it will be U.S. taxpayers. More than $60 billion of the $75 billion Bush is seeking will go directly towards paying for the war. The request assumes it will take 30 days of combat to oust the Iraqi regime.'
Unbelievable. Americans' tax dollars at work.

.< 2:45:23 AM >

Guardian Unlimited | The Guardian | George Monbiot: One rule for them 'Rumsfeld had better watch his back. For this enthusiastic convert to the cause of legal warfare is, as head of the defence department, responsible for a series of crimes sufficient, were he ever to be tried, to put him away for the rest of his natural life.'
Fantastic. This is what I was trying to say last night, expressed so much better by someone more knowledgable than I!

.< 2:39:36 AM >

Oliver Burkeman talks to the man who invented 'shock and awe' [Guardian Unlimited] 'All of which is not to say that Ullman supports the war. Surprisingly, perhaps, he doesn't. "Where we are is where we are, and this is not a criticism and don't write it as such, but if it had been up to me I would have waited months, perhaps, to get a second resolution, when it would have been clear that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction," he says. "I don't agree with the administration view that Iraq is a clear and present danger, an imminent threat."'

Attack Was 48 Hours Old When It 'Began' (washingtonpost.com) 'According to various sources, when Franks first was asked to present a concept of operations, he proposed a large force. Rumsfeld, with the experience of the Afghanistan war fresh in his mind, pushed for a radically different approach that would involve a smaller ground force and much larger participation by Special Operations troops. The push and pull between the two men continued over the months that followed. The initial plan called for 14 days of airstrikes before the onset of the ground attack. Rumsfeld pressed Franks to reduce the time between the air and ground campaigns. Franks sought to convince Rumsfeld of the need for a larger force.'
A fine article with lots of interesting background. Folks can blame Rumsfeld if it turns out the ground forces were too small in number. And it turns out that Powell's insistance that they go to the UN actually bought the war party time to make their plans and get troops into position.

Improved Tools Turn Journalists Into a Quick Strike Force ' Informed by the military that their two-member "embedded" teams would be able to take only the equipment they could personally carry, many television news operations have provided their reporters with a compact kit ? one that enables them to capture, edit, compress and send video with a small digital camera, a laptop computer and a satellite phone.

For Don Dahler and Jay Weiss of ABC News, that means the ability to travel anywhere with the 101st Airborne Division, currently in Kuwait. A profile the two produced on Thursday of the day in the life of a sniper was broadcast on Friday. The technology is turning reporters and camera operators into producers and editors, making often painful judgments about what to include.

Their two-and-a-half minute piece took four hours to compress and send. But the video quality from such setups is good, and the reporting can get quickly out to the world.'

I take off my peace-monger hat for a moment and read about the technology reporters are using.
