Marine writers sound off on the new Iraq war
"Jarhead" author Anthony Swofford and two other Marine Corps chroniclers of Desert Storm direct some not-so-friendly fire at the Bush administration. [Salon] 'The Gulf War might have been brief and -- at least to the American public -- glorious, but the reality on the ground, or sand, was ugly, and it had haunting effects on many of the soldiers who fought it.'

Letter from Baghdad
On our last day in Iraq, people say farewell and ask us to take their photographs. They think it will help if Americans see their faces, that maybe then they won't drop the bombs. [Salon]

Casualties of war
If the U.S. kills 10,000 Iraqi civilians, will this be a just war? 1,000? 100,000? On the eve of destruction, a deadly moral calculus awaits. [Salon]

TV newshounds lock and load as America goes to war. [Salon]

CBC News: Canadians protest against war
It's great to be in Montreal right now. I'm guessing there'll be some kind of protest here on Saturday.

.< 2:41:57 AM >

CBC News: U.S. protesters out in force Thursday 'But in Nashville, Tenn., Peter Fossel, a 57-year-old former Marine, wore a Purple Heart he won in the Vietnam War as he joined about 300 antiwar protesters outside a federal building.

"This America is not the America that I bled for," Fossel said. "This America is the aggressor, and this America is the type of nation that I risked my life to fight against." '

Excellent. Americans are out in force protesting against 'the war party'.

.< 2:19:32 AM >

CBC News: Britons, Americans killed in helicopter crash 'The first coalition casualties of the Iraq offensive have been reported. Twelve Britons and four Americans were killed in the crash of a U.S. Marine helicopter in Kuwait.'
Their blood is on your hands Dubbya.

Quark Soup 'in email Salam said he receives phone calls from cousins in Canada.'
Right on. The Baghdad Blogger has a Canuck connection.

JURIST - Kelly: Could the New International Criminal Court Try Americans for "War Crimes" in Iraq? 'No international body, however, can exercise jurisdiction over Americans for actions undertaken in Iraq. The idea that the new International Criminal Court, which was created last summer, would be able to try and convict Americans fighting abroad in Iraq as "war criminals" if they engaged in prohibited conduct like rape and murder of civilians is simply incorrect.

Conservative activists, like Rush Limbaugh and former Judge Bork, characterize the ICC as a bogeyman ready to sap U.S. sovereignty and put our troops in jeopardy when they are deployed around the world. But no ICC jurisdiction can attach in Iraq because neither the U.S. nor Iraq are party to the Rome Statute that creates the court (the United States signed the treaty in December 2000, but announced its decision not to ratify in May 2002.)

No question. The 'war party' was going to have nothing to do with a treaty that might hold them back.

JURIST's Paper Chase
Here's a blog for those of you interested in following the legal aspects of the war in Iraq. The profs at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law are blogging up a storm!
