"a scathing appraisal of Microsoft’s present and future" [Daypop Top 40]

It's a damn shame this guy doesn't understand how to build a web page because it looks like he's done a good job of dissecting MS.

Sceptics rule out UN resolution. France, Germany and Russia will 'not allow' resolution authorising war against Iraq. [Guardian Unlimited]

holland, nice place to visit. Expatica.com has an excellent piece about recent problems in the teeny nation of the Netherlands that is well worth reading. When reading it, bear in mind that Holland has 16.5 million inhabitants on a land mass smaller than Rhode Island with a Queen (complete with fueding family) and a government that hasn't quite re-installed itself after 2 straight years of scandal, murder and mishap. The collection includes scripts for Keynote, iTunes, iPhoto, DVD Player, and system functions. The scripts are free and require the Sony Ericsson Clicker software and a compatible phone [Macintouch]

Sponge Merchants Soak Up Business. The popular but discontinued contraceptive sponge is back on the market in Canada, thanks to a New Jersey company that bought the rights to sell it. Net merchants are gearing up for a shopping rush. By Kristen Philipkoski. [Wired News]

TC Electronic Announces PowerCore FireWire
RISSKOV, Denmark, Mar. 05, 2003 -- TC Electronic has announced PowerCore FireWire, a new version of its PowerCore audio processing platform that is designed for FireWire-equipped laptop or desktop systems. This addition offers almost twice the power of the PCI-card version, the company says.

The Mossberg Solution -- Personal Technology from The Wall Street Journal. 'The best part about this program [iPhoto] is its interface, which hasn't diverged much from the original version, with good reason. You never have to page through multiple screens. Instead, your pictures are always displayed in one central box, while only the buttons below those pictures change. This format makes editing and organizing so ridiculously simple, that you might wonder if you missed a step.'

Dissident US comic Rich Hall. US comic Rich Hall tells William Cook his song about killing George Bush is going down better in the irony-savvy UK than over in Alabama. [Guardian Unlimited]
Hell, a peace sign is enough to get you arrested in the US.

Compromise resolution likely. Britain is secretly working on a compromise UN resolution on Iraq in the face of opposition from France, Russia and Germany. [Guardian Unlimited]
Excellent. The Bush's 'war party' must be spitting mad.

Britain's dirty secret. This is Falluja 2, identified by Colin Powell as an Iraqi chemical weapons plant. Confidential documents show we were warned but we helped build it. And we covered it up. [Guardian Unlimited]

Grim Future for World's Water. The planet will face an unprecedented shortage of drinking water in the next 20 years, a U.N. report warns. Pollution, global warming and thick-headed politicians get most of the blame. [Wired News]

ABCNEWS.com : Lawyer Arrested for Wearing a 'Peace' T-Shirt '"I was in the food court with my son when I was confronted by two security guards and ordered to either take off the T-shirt or leave the mall," said Downs. When Downs refused the security officers' orders, police from the town of Guilderland were called and he was arrested and taken away in handcuffs, charged with trespassing "in that he knowingly enter(ed) or remain(ed) unlawfully upon premises," the complaint read.'
Unfreakin' believable. How about we all sing a round of 'America the Beautiful'?

God, Satan and the Media 'Claims that the news media form a vast liberal conspiracy strike me as utterly unconvincing, but there's one area where accusations of institutional bias have merit: nearly all of us in the news business are completely out of touch with a group that includes 46 percent of Americans. That's the proportion who described themselves in a Gallup poll in December as evangelical or born-again Christians. Evangelicals have moved from the fringe to the mainstream, and that is particularly evident in this administration.'
Yikes!

Apple gears up to sell music online. Not innovation, necessity [The Register] 'According to the sources, a new version of Apple's iTunes jukebox software will download tracks from the service which simplifies buying, almost certainlt using the 1-Click technology Apple has already licensed from Amazon. Eschewing the MP3 format, Apple's service will be based on Dolby's AAC'

USATODAY.com - Ugly sentiments sting American tourists '"Man, it was bad," says the Rat Pack-y star of Swingers. "These girls saw us and were kind of flirting, and they kept asking us if we were American. Finally we said, 'Yes,' and they just took off. "One girl turns and says, 'We were hoping you were Canadian.' Canadian? Since when was it cooler to be Canadian?"'
Since, like, forever baby!

Globe and Mail: Jeffrey Simpson 'The ideologues believe they are the terrorists' nightmare, but, instead, they are the terrorists' dream, because they have overreacted. By pursuing "regime change," starting with a U.S. general running Iraq for two years or more, the U.S. will turn even more people against them and provide the best recruiting ground yet for militant fundamentalism.

The shock sought by the Americans, therefore, will more likely be to themselves. Unless, of course, the U.S. does an Afghanistan, and turns Iraq, once conquered, from last year's headlines to today's back pages. In which case, Iraq, an artificial country, will fall apart in chaos.'

Another fine editorial from Simpson. Throughout it he refers to the Bush administration as 'the war party'. Excellent. It all becomes pretty clear if you think of it that way.

.< 12:31:21 AM >

Globe and Mail: Norman Spector 'Of course, it's about oil. So was the first Persian Gulf war against Saddam Hussein. And why else did the Americans, and before them the British and French, penetrate the region in the first place?'
Spector doesn't let anyone off the hook here. The Americans want the oil. They bomb Iraq and protect the Saudis. The French are pushing in the opposite direction but for the same reason. And we Canucks will piously denounce Bush and then end up going along with them because we are so dependent on them.
