Jubilation turns to hate
"We want you to go back home. We do not want your American and British aid." [Guardian Unlimited]

.< 11:53:36 PM >

The New Yorker: Fact '?Somebody deliberately let something false get in there,? the former high-level intelligence official added. ?It could not have gotten into the system without the agency being involved. Therefore it was an internal intention. Someone set someone up.? (The White House declined to comment.)'

An article about the forged documents the White House used in an attempt to build a case against Saddam Hussein. Certainly Colin Powell's integrity took a big hit on this issue. No one else in the White House has any credibility anyway nor do they care about their credibility.

Gary Younge: McCarthy's ghost
Anyone who objects to the conflict in Iraq is not allowed to say so in America, reports Gary Younge. [Guardian Unlimited] 'The harassment, arrest, detention and frustration of those who are against the war is becoming routine. Relatives of victims who died on September 11, who are opposed to the war, have been prevented from speaking in schools. Last month Stephen Downs was handcuffed and arrested after refusing to take off a Give Peace a Chance T-shirt in a mall in Albany'
'Live Free or Die' Uh huh.

R.E.M.: Final Straw
'Now love cannot be called into question.
Forgiveness is the only hope I hold.
And love-- love will be my strongest weapon.
I do believe that I am not alone'
REM rush releases a song. You can stream it from this page. I don't suppose it'll get much play on any of the Clear Channel stations any time soon. I just had a look at the URL for the QuickTime stream. Apple's hosting the song. Right on.

.< 11:37:13 PM >

Pitchfork: Daily Music News 'Upon seeing the motley crew of nine musicians, the station's attendant phoned the police, reporting the possibility that the band might be terrorists. Before even having a chance to leave the station, the group was reportedly surrounded by police cars and FBI agents who, a representative for Chicago's Abbey Pub, where the band played this weekend, said had guns drawn. The band was held for questioning for roughly three hours before finally being released as innocents.'
Got off easy 'cause their 'nice white kids from Canada'.

Iraq's X factor: The tribes
More than three-quarters of Iraqis belong to tribes. Some of them have been paid off or threatened into backing Saddam -- but their real allegiance is to themselves. [Salon]

.< 11:10:01 PM >

Oscar winning editor switches from Avid to FCP 'Oscar winning editor Walter Murch ("Apocalypse Now," "The English Patient") switched from an Avid system to Final Cut Pro running on Power Mac G4s for "Cold Mountain," the new film he's editing for director Anthony Minghella.'

.< 6:36:14 PM >

CBC News: Liberals considered recalling U.S. ambassador ' On Wednesday, Liberal MPs held a fractious meeting behind closed doors, debating whether to sanction Ambassador Paul Cellucci.'
Excellent.

.< 6:33:11 PM >

CBC News: Nobel Peace Prize winners arrested at White House protest

.< 6:31:01 PM >

CBC News: Cellucci should respect Canada's stand: Online letters Don Armstrong of Burlington, Ontario, said Canadians should thank Cellucci for speaking his mind on the issue. "I firmly believe that those members of the Canadian public who are versed in the history of this issue are petrified by the ramifications of doing nothing, and are in firm agreement with the U.S. policy towards Iraq," Armstrong said. "How different things would be had anthrax shown up in Ottawa."
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Omigod. Some rascal at CBC online chose to quote that letter as one of the supporters of Cellucci's words. Oh that is too good to be true. 'Versed in the history of this issue' indeed. Dude should call the FBI as he clearly knows something the rest of us don't.

.< 6:05:58 PM >

CBC News: Canada pledges $100M in aid to Iraq 'The money will help provide clean water, food, shelter and health care to Iraqi victims of war.'
Isn't it great that we all get to clean up the mess Bush's war party made!?

The Onion | America's Finest News Source'Vital Info On Iraqi Chemical Weapons Provided By U.S. Company That Made Them'
Oh dear. Do we laugh or cry? Do go visit the home page. It's a freakin' riot.

The Onion | Dead Iraqi Would Have Loved Democracy"Taha was a wonderful man, a man of peace," his wife Sawssan said. "I just know he would have been happy to see free elections here in Iraq, had that satellite-guided Tomahawk cruise missile not strayed off course and hit our home."
It's The Onion folks.

.< 5:24:30 PM >

Yesterday I went trough the last 12 months of posts. I didn't read them all, but... well, I saw my life passing before my eyes. [Paolo Valdemarin: Paolo's Weblog]
This is one of the main reasons I write on the web.

Use a PowerBook's built-in keyboard and external display [macosxhints]

.< 5:16:49 PM >

The Onion | Point-Counterpoint: The War On Iraq 'And what exactly is our endgame here? Do we really believe that we can install Gen. Tommy Franks as the ruler of Iraq? Is our arrogance and hubris so great that we actually believe that a U.S. provisional military regime will be welcomed with open arms by the Iraqi people? Democracy cannot possibly thrive under coercion. To take over a country and impose one's own system of government without regard for the people of that country is the very antithesis of democracy. And it is doomed to fail. A war against Iraq is not only morally wrong, it will be an unmitigated disaster.
This is The Onion?! What's so funny? Oh. Read the rebuttal!! Yup. That about sums it up.

.< 5:05:03 PM >

"Washington Post" [Daypop Top 40] 'The result is idiosyncratic, passionate and often profane, with the sort of intimacy and attitude that are all but impossible in newspapers and on television. Many of these so-called Weblogs eliminate the middleman -- the news outlets whose reach was once needed for a broad audience -- and allow participants to have their say, typos and all, without being run through the media's Cuisinart.'

When are facts facts? Not in a war

Bush fiddles while Baghdad burns
Could a global rebellion against US values presage the decline of its empire, asks Mark Tran. [Guardian Unlimited]
I'd like to think that US values are not reflected by the Bush administration.

In pictures: Baghdad shops bombing
Images from Baghdad after a row of shops was reportedly hit in a coalition air raid, killing at least 14 people. [BBC News | World | UK Edition]

Ed Cone : "If an Iraqi division...
Ed Cone: "If an Iraqi division was rolling up I-85 through Greensboro on its way to overthrow some hypothetical despot in Washington, I'd like to think Id have the wherewithal to pick a couple of the bastards off along the way." [Scripting News]
Someone's thinking.

Pakistan and India test missiles
South Asia's two nuclear rivals say they have carried out test-launches of short-range, nuclear-capable missiles. [BBC News | World | UK Edition]
Dubbya's legacy . . . a safer world.

"Shut your mouth"
As radio giants censor antiwar musicians, TV networks bully pro-peace actors, and Attorney General John Ashcroft prepares a new assault on civil liberties, a climate of intimidation creeps over America. [Salon]
