Inventor Rejoices as TVs Go Dark

Tired of blaring TV sets at shops, bars and waiting rooms? A new universal remote called the TV-B-Gone lets users turn off virtually any set. A trial run in the streets of San Francisco shows the device to be quite effective. By Steven Bodzin.

Sometimes when I'm talking to people about the stuff I do they seem stunned that I have my fingers in so many pies. One way to get lots done is to avoid watching tv.

Team Bush declares war on the New York Times

US elections: The Bush White House's attacks on one of America's grandest newspapers mark a clear break with Republican tradition, writes Eric Boehlert. (From salon.com.)
[Via Guardian Unlimited]
'That confrontation, and the Bush campaign's harsh accusation that respected journalist Suskind and the editors of the Times are liars, come on the heels of a series of denigrations by the White House: the Times reporter was recently banned from Cheney's campaign plane; and in his acceptance speech before the Republican Convention Bush mocked the paper by distorting, out of context, one of its columnist's writings of almost 60 years ago.'

Another example of the extreme arrogance of an out of control administration for whom the truth means nothing.

Metacorder turns 'Book into field audio recorder

Audio production software developer Gallery UK said on Monday that its latest application, Metacorder 1.0, is now available. Metacorder allows users to connect existing Core Audio hardware and connect it to a PowerBook or iBook to create a fully functional audio recorder for deployment in the field. The software features a 1- to 30-second pre-record buffer, the ability to write a recording to two drives simultaneously, the option to automatically copy files onto optical media as soon as the recording stops and more.

Sense & Sensors in Digital Photography

In sum, with the range of sensors used in cameras today, there is no point to worrying about a few megapixels more or less. Shrinking cells to fit more of them in the sensor can lose more information than it gains. The size of the cells is likely to be more important than their number. For the same money, I would rather buy a larger sensor with fewer pixels than a smaller sensor with more pixels. If nothing else, the larger sensor is likely to be sharper because it will be less sensitive to movement of the camera.

Lots of myth debunking here. Good reference.

Mexican blasts to finish line - Toronto Marathon champ is farmer with nine brothers who vows to share $25,000 prize
Procopio Franco was a world away from the warm corn fields of his Mexican farm yesterday when he dashed past the finish line and captured first prize at the Toronto Marathon on one of the coldest, wettest days of the season.

The 34-year-old slight, wiry man, who shivered for warmth in his red athletic suit, said he could have done even better if it had not been so windy.

"It was a very up-and-down course and it was far too cold," Mr. Franco said through a friend, who translated his comments into English.
