Mexico has 'giant wealth divide'

Mexico has some of the highest and the lowest standards of living in the world, such is the extent of the gap between rich and poor, a UN report says.
[Via BBC News | World | UK Edition]
'Some parts of Mexico City could be compared to Spanish or German cities, the study found, but other parts were more like the poorest parts of Africa.

The UN Development Programme study found that more needed to be done to close the nation's wealth gap.

It added that a lot had already been done to reduce the sharp divide.'

The American Conservative chooses Kerry over Bush

Mark Frauenfelder: Chris sez: The American Conservative magazine, headed up by Pat Buchanon, has come out in favor of Kerry by coming out against Bush:

Bush has behaved like a caricature of what a right-wing president is supposed to be, and his continuation in office will discredit any sort of conservatism for generations. The launching of an invasion against a country that posed no threat to the U.S., the doling out of war profits and concessions to politically favored corporations, the financing of the war by ballooning the deficit to be passed on to the nation’s children, the ceaseless drive to cut taxes for those outside the middle class and working poor: it is as if Bush sought to resurrect every false 1960s-era left-wing cliché about predatory imperialism and turn it into administration policy. Add to this his nation-breaking immigration proposal -- Bush has laid out a mad scheme to import immigrants to fill any job where the wage is so low that an American can’t be found to do it -- and you have a presidency that combines imperialist Right and open-borders Left in a uniquely noxious cocktail.

UPDATE: Anonymous sez: If you look closely, you'll notice that their editorial staff was split and so they each did a seperate endorsement. Among the staff, they pretty much endorsed everyone from Bush to Badnarik to (shockingly enough) Nader. To say they endorsed Kerry is accurate, but also very misleading. One editor endorsed Kerry, the rest endorsed others.

Bravo. I think Canada should follow suit.

Glad this is coming out before the election. There's more crap to come.

RNC fear-phrases video

Cory Doctorow: This video pieces together all the instances of speakers at the RNC saying things like "terrorism," "September 11th," and other fearmongering buzz-phrases. It's actually startling to get a sense of how much reptition of the talking points went on at the convention: could they really be this blatant?

Delicious Library
Quickly importing your stuff into Delicious Library doesn't require a dedicated barcode scanner - you can use any QuickTime®-supported digital video camera, like your Apple iSight. Just hold the barcode on the back of any book, movie, CD, or video game in front of the camera and your item magically shows up on your digital shelf seconds later. Using the same technology found in $800 industrial-strength CCD barcode scanners, Delicious Library reads every single frame of digital video; seeking out, targeting, and instantly decoding any visible barcodes.
