Watching WWDC Coverage

I'm in three different chats watching coverage of the WWDC in San Francisco. Favorite so far from MacMerc:

"01:06 PM - Fashion note: Steve is wearing dark pants, not jeans. It's also snowing in hell. "

Apple+Intel Post Annoucement Second Thoughts

Apple has spent the last 5 years transitioning from a very proprietary OS and API structure to one that's easily adopted by the Linux generation. They picked now to do it because they've got some market play with the iPod, a revenue stream that has nothing to do with OSes and momentum (no spyware, no viruses).

A good analysis from Steve. There's more at the link.

Apple pulls the ultimate switch with Intel embrace

Jobs confirms

Apple has bought into its own ad campaign and become a switcher. As expected, the Mac maker announced today that it will next year start phasing Intel processors into its computer line.…

I have a few posts on my regular blog.

The announcement is over at 2PM Eastern,...

The announcement is over at 2PM Eastern, now the bits the others don't have: 1. Apple is not going into the software business, their operating system will not run on other vendor's hardware. So you won't be running the Mac OS on Dell, HP or IBM, for example. and 2. While Windows is not explicitly supported, they won't do anything to prevent Windows from running on their hardware. More info may follow shortly.

Apple: Steve Switches the Mac

He really did it; Steve Jobs just switched the Macintosh from PowerPC to the Intel x86 platform. Developers can order $999 "Developer Transition Kits" today.

Hollywood Orders: Apple Wed Intel

Apple's marriage to Intel is a shotgun wedding and Tinseltown is behind it. News analysis (actually, pure guesswork) by Leander Kahney.
[Via Wired News]

"Intel's DRM scheme has been kept under wraps -- to prevent giving clues to crackers -- but the company has said it will allow content to be moved around a home network, and onto suitably-equipped portable devices. And that's why the whole Mac platform has to shift to Intel."
[snip]
"If Apple has licensed QuickTransit for an Intel-powered Mac, all current applications should just work, no user or developer intervention required."

Buyers ignore warnings, embrace DualDiscs
Yet consumers appear to be ignoring the dire warnings and to date have reported relatively few problems to retailers and DualDisc manufacturers. Music industry officials say more than 2 million DualDiscs have already been purchased, and predict sales will accelerate in the wake of successful DualDisc-only releases by such big-name artists as Bruce Springsteen and Rob Thomas.

"We've seen almost no problems at all. It's an infinitesimally small number of complaints compared to the million discs we've sold," said Thomas Hesse, president of global digital business for Sony BMG Music Entertainment, which makes and distributes DualDiscs.

News: Intel's Chandrasekher talks Apple

IDGNS interviews Intel vice president Anand Chandrasekher about, among other things, the company’s interest in Apple.
[Via MacCentral]
"We always talk to Apple. Apple is a design win that we’ve coveted for 20 years and we continue to covet them as a design win. We will never give up on Apple."

The New York Times > Technology > Apple Plans to Switch From I.B.M. to Intel for Chips
"This is a seismic shift in the world of personal computing and consumer electronics," said Richard Doherty, president of the Envisioneering Group, a Seaford, N.Y., computer and consumer electronics industry consulting firm. "It is bound to rock the industry, but it will also be a phenomenal engineering challenge for Apple."

A fine article from the Times which reminds me of the relevance of fine journalism from a respected paper versus the chatter which occurs on the weblogs.

PQ Leader Landry quits politics after 76.2 per cent score in leadership vote (Canadian Press)

Canadian Press - QUEBEC (CP) - Bernard Landry's shocking resignation as leader of the Parti Quebecois on Saturday promises to realign Canada's political landscape, creating a vacuum that could quickly be filled by Gilles Duceppe's triumphant return to Quebec.
[Via Yahoo! News - World]
Big news. Landry is stepping down at a moment when the PQ are high in the polls. It could be a disaster for them. But if Duceppe rides into town it could be brilliant for them.
