I really want to get a California driver's license. Imagine the possibilities: When I get a speeding ticket in Canada, I present the officer my Cali. license. When I get a speeding ticket in America, I present the officer my Manitoba license!

Minor snags:

  • Someone told me that they try to take away your old license when you get a new one.
  • I'd have to take a written AND IN CAR TEST:

If you have a license from another country, you will be required to take a drive test. If you have a license from another state, the drive test can be waived.

Maybe I'll just settle for an ID card. I need one of the two to file taxes (!) by April 15th. TurboTax for the web tells me I owe $374 for last year. On the upside, it didn't cost me anything to find out the bad news -- their web based tax software is free for people with income under $25,000.

Here's a little hostel drama: Yesterday the gossip was that the weird lady from London got kicked out for bringing homeless people into her room (!). She also stole some guy's passport (for a day) when he passed out from drinking in the common room. And the other day the owner was telling me he's trying to evict this old guy for constantly blowing the fuse by using the toaster oven and microwave at the same time. I guess I'd better be on my best behavior.
