There is a lot of gloating about the fact that the Belgium government is being sued under its own universal war crimes law. In fact all countries should have a law that allows charges to be laid against its own citizens within the framework of the local legal system if they commit or aid the commission of war crimes. It’s the application of one country’s law in politically motivated attacks on people in a third country that is the problem.

It’s quite odd that columnist and author Tom Segev can write an opinion piece comparing the interaction between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas and other terror groups to the relationship between the Jewish Agency in Mandate Palestinian and the Irgun and the Stern Gang without mentioning the final act in their relationship and why the Palestinians must copy this act. In 1948 Hanganh leader and later Israel Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion order the Israeli military to take on and forcibly integrate the Irgun, including sinking their supply ship the Altalena.

Until the Palestinian Authority shows that it is willing to forcibly act against other armed groups within Palestinian society they cannot be a trustworthy partner for peace.
