an "industry-regulated system"
The Death Of The Internet  [Hypergene MediaBlog]
The Internet’s promise as a new medium -- where text, audio, video and data can be freely exchanged -- is under attack by the corporations that control the public’s access to the 'Net, as they see opportunities to monitor and charge for the content people seek and send. The industry’s vision is the online equivalent of seizing the taxpayer-owned airways, as radio and television conglomerates did over the course of the 20th century.

Yet Another Microsoft PR Fiasco
MSN Ads Anger NYC.  Following in the footsteps of IBM's gaffe last year, Microsoft is ordered to end its guerilla marketing campaign for MSN 8.  [internetnews.com: Top News]
On Wednesday and Thursday, Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft plastered the city with the decals, which were aimed at building buzz around the launch of its MSN 8 Internet service. MSN 8 debuted officially on Thursday with a party and a rock concert in New York's Central Park.

The decals featured the MSN brand logo -- a multicolored butterfly -- and the service's new tagline, "It's Better with the Butterfly." The ads appeared on city streets, sidewalks, signs and the sides of buildings.
Their marketing department must be on crack... ;~))

bloghacking
Evan Williams (evhead):  "Blogger was hacked, in case you missed it. Actually, it's not as bad as it looked. We've found the cause and restored everything pretty much back to normal. Now it's just a public relations and user-confidence nightmare ("just" ;). Thanks to everyone who wrote in with the heads-up and support."

Microsoft, Disney Team Up on Internet   [MyFreePress.com]
"We've been looking for a safer environment to take Disney to the next level," said Eisner, whose sharp tan suit contrasted with the casual Gates' usual open-necked shirt.
They'll probably be working together as lobbyists, too, pushing for adding another 120 years to copyright terms...
