QUOTE OF THE DAY "Courage will guide our nation through this crisis. Courage will enable us to set our government right. Courage will enable us to go to the campuses, to labor halls, to church halls and to the streets to organize against a war which will undermine our nation, ruin our reputation, kill innocent people and damage the economy of our nation and the world." - - Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) RHINO HERE: The dispicable children's xmas gift dubbed FORWARD COMMAND POST I featured Wednesday... http://radio.weblogs.com/0103207/2002/12/18.html#a621 ...has been pulled from the J.C. Penny catalog. Thanks to all who joined me in complaining. The bad news is it's still available at K-Mart and KB Toys. To try and get it discontinued at their stores as well, make your voices be heard at the following web pages: http://www.kbtoys.com/help/miscEmail2.html http://www.kmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1199191 The National Coalition to Repeal the Patriot Act is holding a panel discussion/workshop January 25, in Atlanta, Georgia. 18 cities, including Denver & Madison, have passed resolutions in support of repealing the act. 35 other cities are considering legislation. More information on this coalition at: http://shamon.com/repeal/ And speaking of the Patriot Act, up to 1000 Muslims have been arrested in the past week just in California alone. These folks were arrested for complying with US government requests to register in phase 2 of a special registration required by the Attorney General as part of the Patriot Act. The detailed instructions for Males, 16 years of age or older who are nationals or citizens of specified Arab countries ends with the sentence, "We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in complying with these registration procedures." Apparently, hundreds of Muslim men went to register as instructed and were immediately arrested. The instructions from the INS are an interesting read and are posted at: http://www.adc.org/index.php?id=1353 The article excerpted and linked below the line tells this tale.

By Jill Serjeant, Reuters News Service, 12/18/02 LOS ANGELES - Hundreds of Iranian and other Middle East citizens were in southern California jails on Wednesday after coming forward to comply with a new rule to register with immigration authorities only to wind up handcuffed and behind bars. Shocked and frustrated Islamic and immigrant groups estimate that more than 500 people have been arrested in Los Angeles, neighboring Orange County and San Diego in the past three days under a new nationwide anti-terrorism program. Some unconfirmed reports put the figure as high as 1,000. The arrests sparked a demonstration by hundreds of Iranians outside a Los Angeles immigration office. The protesters carried banners saying "What's next? Concentration camps?" and "What happened to liberty and justice?." A spokesman for the Immigration and Naturalization Service said no numbers of people arrested would be made public. A Justice Department spokesman could not be reached for comment. The head of the Southern California chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union compared the arrests to the internment of Japanese Americans in camps during the Second World War. "I think it is shocking what is happening. It is reminiscent of what happened in the past with the internment of Japanese Americans. We are getting a lot of telephone calls from people. We are hearing that people went down wanting to cooperate and then they were detained," said Ramona Ripston, the ACLU's executive director...
