A compelling 1989 drama about two aboriginal children kidnapped by Canadian Government officials and placed in a boarding school, an environment where they are emotionally and sometimes sexually abused. Later they are told that their parents have died and they must remain in the institution where they are forced to give up their language, their heritage and, almost, their spirits. Their only chance lies in escape. Michelle St. John is uncannily powerful in the lead role with Anne-Marie MacDonald as her sympathetic teacher.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Life is a great big canvas, and you should throw all the paint you can at it.
- - Danny Kaye

RHINO HERE:
There's been a lot of reports about corporations positioning themselves to gain control of all sources of drinking water worldwide. Very scary if you ask the Rhino. And now comes an announcement with great promise yet also the possibility of continuing corporate control of energy sources. The announcement, from a group of military & space program types calling themselves "Genesis World Energy", claims a scientific breakthrough promising a "limitless, low cost and environmentally clean source of energy". The source? Water.

But that's a possibility in the future. A viable source of "limitless, low cost and environmentally clean source of energy" right now is solar voltaics (PV). A recent article in the N.Y. Times highlights the continuing rise in the number of consumers installing PV systems into their homes and entering into "Net Metering" contracts with their local electrical companies whereby their electric meters literally spin backwards and they sell the juice to their "provider". Net metering is currently used in 37 states and in California, the number of consumers applying for net-metering rebates more than doubled this year.

It's sad that shrub & company have had, in the post 9/11 environment, the best opportunity ever to convince Americans of the need to practice energy conservation and to invest in alternate forms of energy and have passed, in favor of maintaining the oily status quo. In spite of them, below the line today, an article from Monday's N.Y. Times leaks details of a forthcoming announcement to be made next month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit by General Motors, of their intentions to offer hybrid electric power on 5 of its major models. Hybrid is moving from an environmental & P.R. curiosity to a viable commercial product. Rhino says, "Go Hybrid."

DETROIT, Dec. 23 - General Motors, which has been the most reticent major carmaker when it came to the prospects for hybrid vehicles, intends to offer some form of hybrid electric power on five of its major models over the next four production years, according to people briefed on the plan.

G.M.'s plan, which will be announced next month at the North American International Auto Show here, is a surprising endorsement of the fledgling hybrid technology, which improves gasoline mileage by supplementing the internal combustion engine with electric power. G.M., the largest automaker, will offer several versions of the hybrid technology. The most advanced will be on the Saturn Vue sport utility vehicle, while less advanced versions will be available on the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks, a coming Chevrolet pickup called the Equinox and the Chevrolet Malibu.

The development is a sign that the Big Three are growing increasingly serious about the technology as a business threat from overseas. For several years, Toyota and Honda have been the only companies offering hybrid cars. The Toyota Prius, for instance, has an electric motor that takes over for the internal combustion engine at low speeds. The car never needs plugging in, a shortcoming of battery-powered cars, because the battery is recharged by the gasoline engine. Honda sells a small aluminum hybrid, called the Insight, and a hybrid version of its Civic.

"G.M. needs an aggressive plan just to keep pace with the Japanese, who view this as a core technology over the next decade," said John Casesa, an analyst with Merrill Lynch, when told of the plan. "It's an idea that hasn't arrived yet, but whose time is coming fast. This is going from an environmental and public relations curiosity to a generally accepted commercial product."...
