I'm writing one blog for both Xmas Eve and Xmas Day with my major intent to offer you and yours a fun and meaningful holiday. I'm going to shy away from the normal politics of the blog and instead offer 2 humorous bits; and a note with links about the death Sunday of Joe Strummer.
Joe Strummer, lead singer & songwriter for revolutionary British punk band "The Clash", died Sunday unexpectedly at age of 50, at his farmhouse in Somerset, southwestern England. Strummer and The Clash created some of the most politically-charged pop music in the history of the recording industry, changing the lives of a generation inspired by the band's raw energy, their honesty & their recognition of the inherent contradictions of trying to be a dissident in modern capitalist society.
Always political and known as champions of many left-wing causes, in 1980 they titled their album "Sandinista", after the left-wing guerrilla movement in Nicaragua.
They were anti-racist and noted for inflammatory, intelligent punk songs such as London Calling, White Riot, White Man In Hammersmith Palais and Tommy Gun.
