QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND "Puritanism: the haunting fear that somebody, somewhere, might be having a good time." - - H.L. Mencken THIS WEEKEND IN HISTORY November 15, 1969 -- While President "Tricky" Dick M Nixon watches the Ohio State football team beat Purdue on TV, over half a million people march on Washington in a MOBE-organized protest of the Viet Nam War. Protesters rally in front of the White House to conclude the March Against Death which began two days ago in darkness & near-freezing temperatures near the gates of Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. 1,200 protesters crossed the Arlington Memorial Bridge every hour & then walked four miles to the White House. Each marcher carried a candle & a placard that named a soldier killed in Vietnam. Reaching the White House, they paused to say aloud the name of their soldier, then headed for Capitol Hill, where they put their placards in 40 coffins. Recitation of U.S. deaths in Vietnam War takes 36 hours. All told, 45,000 marched through the two cold, stormy nights. The first marcher was Judy Droz, a 23-year-old mother whose husband died in Vietnam this April. Speakers included Senators Eugene McCarthy, George McGovern, Charles Goodell; African Americans Coretta King, Dick Gregory; Conductor Leonard Bernstein; Singers: Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul, & Mary, John Denver, Mitch Miller; & the touring cast of Hair. November 16, 1969 -- White House Communications Director Herbie Klein says he opposes government intervention in coverage of the news, but "this would be invited" if the TV networks fail to regulate themselves. His statement was made on the same day the media finally printed the story of the My Lai Massacre in which a U.S. Army platoon led by Lieutenant William Calley Jr., killed 567 unarmed Vietnamese peasants. Calley eventually faced a court martial and was sentenced to life in prison. That sentence was changed to 20 years hard labor, then changed again to 10 years. He served 3 years before a Federal judge declared his conviction unconstitutional and he was freed. Twenty-four others were charged in the slayings & their cover-up, but only Calley was convicted. Tom Morello Rages Against A New Machine On Solo Acoustic Tour MTV.com, 10.22.2003 "Media consolidation needs smashing and globalization needs unmasking, and that is what the Nightwatchman is called to do on this tour." - Tom Morello For over a year, guitarist Tom Morello has been playing with his new group Audioslave, and while three-quarters of the musicians are from his former outfit Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave's music lacks fiery, politically charged lyrics. So, as much as he loves Audioslave, Morello is exhilarated to be taking part in Tell Us the Truth, a winter acoustic tour with Billy Bragg and Lester Chambers conceived to protest media consolidation and globalization. The 14-date trek kicks off November 7 with two nights at the National Conference on Media Reform in Madison, Wisconsin. Dates run through November 24 in Washington, D.C. All three artists will perform solo acoustic. "It's very stripped down and Woody Guthrie-esque, sort of early Bob Dylan 'The Times They Are A-Changin' ' kind of show," Morello said. "It's unlikely that there will be any mosh pits, but one never knows."... Ehrlich, Artists Network, 5 November 2003 BANGKOK, Thailand -- After denouncing the U.S.-led war in Iraq, rock legend Carlos Santana told more than 10,000 cheering fans at a sensational concert on Nov. 3 that President George W. Bush must change his "evil ways". "He is supposed to be America's president, but he's not my president, I didn't vote for him," Mr. Santana said at a news conference on Nov. 2 shortly after arriving in the Thai capital during his brief "Shaman Tour 2003" in Asia. When asked for his opinion about the U.S.-led war in Iraq, Mr. Santana replied: "The only thing I know is all wars are wrong. "There is no such thing as 'holy war' because this is a contradiction. I believe that if we declare war against anything, it should be war against poverty and ignorance," the moustached musician said. "This whole planet, everyone, should have free electricity, water and education." ... THE REST IS AT: http://www.artistsnetwork.org/news11/news532.html

Austrionics is New California State Language
The New California Governor has just announced an agreement
whereby English will be the official language of the state,
rather than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, The Terminator's Government
conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement
and has accepted a 5-year phase-in plan that would become
known as "Austro-English" (or, perhaps even better, "Austrionics".)
In the first year, "s" will replace the
soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with
joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of the "k". This
should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less
letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the
sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with the "f". This
will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.
In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new
spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated
changes are possible.
Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters
which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also,
al wil agre that the horibl mes of
the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go
away.
By the 4th yer peopl wil be reseptiv to steps
such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".
During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be
dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve
vil hav a reil sensibl riten styl.
Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and
evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a
united urop vil finali kum tru.
If zis mad yu smil, pleas pas it on to oza pepl.
