QUOTE OF THE DAY
LOVE is the virtue of the HEART
SINCERITY the virtue of the MIND
COURAGE the virtue of the SPIRIT
DECISION the virtue of the WILL
- - Frank Lloyd Wright

KNOW YOUR HISTORY - NOVEMBER
1963
-- US: Millions of TV watchers see Jack Ruby, the operator of a local striptease club, stick a revolver into Lee Harvey Oswald's side, & shoot him dead. First live TV killing. The Dallas Police let a local thug walk into the station & kill the most important prisoner in U.S. history since John Wilkes Booth.
SAME DAY -- LBJ signs a national security memorandum stating the US goal in Vietnam is helping the Saigon government to a military "victory". Before the assassination, JFK had been planning troop withdrawals of 1000 of the 17,000 advisors in Vietnam. He'd also quietly opened a dialogue with Castro & pursued detente with the USSR. Tens upon tens of thousands of U.S. youth were soon shipping off to a place they'd never heard of. Hey, hey, LBJ! How many kids did you kill today!.
1979 -- US: Federal government admits troops in Vietnam were exposed to the toxic Agent Orange.

RHINO HERE:
On the road home from the SOA demonstration this weekend. More on that in blogs to come. On Saturday, Amy Goodman of Democracy Now, told a tale to the thousands strong crowd gathered to shut down the School Of The Americas, at the gates to Fort Benning near Columbus, Georgia.

Earlier that week in Miami, covering the Free Trade Area Of The Americas (FTAA) meetings & protests, her partner Jeremy Kahill was shot by police using rubber bullets. Another of her associates was arrested. At a point in the adventure, 1 cop says, "Is she one of ours?" and a 2nd replies, "No." So the 1st says, "Then take her in." Are the police now triaging the independent journalists into jail & the embedded get a "Get out o' jail free card?"

Hardly the worst of the police tricks that went on in Miami last week. Today's BOTTOM LINE is Tom Hayden reporting on inside the meeting progress, and outside the meetings demonstrations.

But first, what I believe are 2 important perspectives: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on the personal, family to family effects, of shrub's environmental irresponsibility; and US Representative Jesse Jackson, Jr. 's take on the recent confederate flag comments by Howard Dean.

Crimes Against Nature
by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Rolling Stone , 12/11/03
George W. Bush will go down in history as America's worst environmental president. In a ferocious three-year attack, the Bush administration has initiated more than 200 major rollbacks of America's environmental laws, weakening the protection of our country's air, water, public lands and wildlife. Cloaked in meticulously crafted language designed to deceive the public, the administration intends to eliminate the nation's most important environmental laws by the end of the year. Under the guidance of Republican pollster Frank Luntz, the Bush White House has actively hidden its anti-environmental program behind deceptive rhetoric, telegenic spokespeople, secrecy and the intimidation of scientists and bureaucrats. The Bush attack was not entirely unexpected. George W. Bush had the grimmest environmental record of any governor during his tenure in Texas. Texas became number one in air and water pollution and in the release of toxic chemicals. In his six years in Austin, he championed a short-term pollution-based prosperity, which enriched his political contributors and corporate cronies by lowering the quality of life for everyone else. Now President Bush is set to do the same to America. After three years, his policies are already bearing fruit, diminishing standards of living for millions of Americans. I  am angry both as a citizen and a father...

Dean's New Southern Strategy
Blacks and Whites Together--Focused on Education and Healthcare
by US Representative Jesse Jackson, Jr., The Nation , 12/1/03
Historically, the Confederate flag is a symbol of the Democratic Party. Today, however, Republicans can fly and wave it, but Democrats can't talk about it--and current Democrats don't know how to handle it. As a result, the symbol Howard Dean used got in the way of his substance, but his substance was on point--and the point was that Southern whites and blacks together must focus on their common economic needs: jobs, good schools, affordable healthcare.  Ho ward Dean has a new Democratic Southern strategy. Democrats know the divide in the South is race. Republicans have exploited it. Democrats have evaded it. ...
-SNIP- -SNIP-

...Rather than repeating this stereotypical and condescending approach of appealing to whites in the South with a "balanced ticket" and "social conservatism," Howard Dean dares a new approach--to join whites and blacks around a common economic agenda of good schools and healthcare.

If Howard Dean wins the nomination around an economic agenda, and can effectively combat the certain Republican tactic of diversion--using social issues openly, and race more subtly, to sublimate economic concerns--then Democrats may once again be able to win in the South and pursue a progressive economic agenda for the benefit of all Americans.

That's Howard Dean's approach and his challenge. I support him because I think it's the right strategy politically, economically and morally.

Miami Vice
By Tom Hayden, AlterNet, November 20, 2003
Editor's Note: Tom Hayden is reporting for AlterNet from the Free Trade Area of the Americas conference in Miami.

MIAMI - Protestors seemed to skirmish with heavily armored Miami police outside the Riande Hotel Thursday morning, but nothing is at it seems this week. These "anarchists" were undercover police officers whose mission was to provoke a confrontation. The crowd predictably panicked, television cameras moved in, the police lines parted, and I watched through a nearby hotel window as two undercover officers disguised as "anarchists," thinking they were invisible, hugged each other. They excitedly pulled tasers and other weapons out of their camouflage cargo pants, and slipped away in an unmarked police van.

On the other side of the impenetrable police barricade, a young woman with a video camera was bent over, vomiting from pepper spray. The nonviolent revolutionary Starhawk stood blinded for 10 minutes as friends washed her eyes. Others knelt paralyzed on the street.  A few hours later, hundreds of peaceful protestors - and a few shocked reporters - sitting quietly in Bayfront Park on Biscayne Boulevard were sprayed like unwanted pests by officers who described themselves as Robo-Cops...
