QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND
"Bush is my shepherd, I shall be in want. He leadeth me beside the still factories, He maketh me to lie down on park benches, He restoreth my doubts about the Republican party, He guideth me onto the paths of unemployment for the party's sake. I do fear the evildoers, for thou talkst about them constantly. Thy tax cuts for the rich and thy deficit spending They do discomfort me. Thou anointeth me with never-ending debt, And my savings and assets shall soon be gone. Surely poverty and hard living shall follow me, And my jobless children shall dwell in my basement forever."
- - Psalm 2003

THIS WEEKEND IN HISTORY
November 29th, 1864
-- On orders from Colorado's Governor John Evans, Colonel J M Chivington (a Methodist preacher) and 900 U.S. Army Cavalrymen, attack a sleeping, unsuspecting camp of Cheyenne & Arapaho Indians  (ordered away from the protection of Fort Lyon 4 days before). Having surrounded the camp, the troops butcher over 500 unarmed men, women & children, despite a white surrender flag having been raised. After 'victory', these fine sons of America scalp & mutilate the bodies, cutting out the females' genitalia & attaching them to their hats & saddles. The bodies are left to rot. Nine of 900 cavalrymen were killed. A local newspaper called this "A brilliant feat of arms" & stated the soldiers had  "covered themselves with glory." The "Sand Creek Massacre"was a chief cause of the Arapaho-Cheyenne war that followed & of far-reaching influence in the Plains Indian wars of the next decade. More: http://www.sandcreek.org

Participant at KKK initiation wounded after shots fired into sky
JOHNSON CITY, Tennessee (AP) --A bullet fired in the air during a Ku Klux Klan initiation ceremony came down and struck a participant in the head, critically injuring him, authorities said. Gregory Allen Freeman, 45, was charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment in the Saturday night incident that wounded Jeffery S. Murr, 24. About 10 people, including two children, had gathered for the ceremony. The man who was being initiated was blindfolded, tied with a noose to a tree and shot with paintball guns as Freeman fired a pistol in the air to provide the sound of real gunfire, Sheriff Fred Phillips said. A bullet struck Murr on the top of the head and exited at the bottom of his skull, authorities said. Freeman fled the ceremony but was arrested near his home, authorities said. He was released on $7,500 bail.

Queen's fury as Bush goons wreck garden
Exclusive By Terry O'Hanlon, Nov 23 2003
THE Queen is furious with President George W. Bush after his state visit caused thousands of pounds of damage to her gardens at Buckingham Palace. Royal officials are now in touch with the Queen's insurers and Prime Minister Tony Blair to find out who will pick up the massive repair bill. Palace staff said they had never seen the Queen so angry as when she saw how her perfectly-mantained lawns had been churned up after being turned into helipads with three giant H landing markings for the Bush visit. The rotors of the President's Marine Force One helicopter and two support Black Hawks damaged trees and shrubs that had survived since Queen Victoria's reign. And Bush's army of clod-hopping security service men trampled more precious and exotic plants. The Queen's own flock of flamingoes, which security staff insisted should be moved in case they flew into the helicopter rotors, are thought to be so traumatised after being taken to a "place of safety" that they might never return home...

Electronic Nose May Replicate Dog's Sniffing Skill
By Cyrille Cartier
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A new device called a "dog on a chip" may combine the benefits of technology and nature by not only detecting dangerous or illicit substances but by providing the electronic equivalent of a dog barking, researchers said on Friday. The device is more accurate and faster than other electronic sensors and drug-sniffing dogs, a team at the Georgia Institute of Technology said. "We took the road less traveled and went in the direction of fusing biotechnology and microelectronics," said William Hunt, a professor of electrical and computer engineering who led the study. The dog-on-a-chip works with antibodies by looking at their molecular structure, Hunt said. In this case the researchers tested cocaine antibodies, which change in structure and mass if they come into contact with cocaine molecules.

Peace quilts travel round the world
by Linda Speel, The Awakened Woman, 10/29/03

This quilt was inspired by the Bare Witness movement last year when women came together to lay down their nude bodies, spelling out symbols or words like Peace, Truth, and Compassion in Marin and Sonoma County's as a protest against the on-coming war. Others joined in with the movement, too with a "Make Love Not War" human statement in SF. It has grown all around the world with people joining in to create their own visual statement. See photos at: http://www.baringwitness.org .
I participated in a few of these events and being an artist as well as an activist, I express myself through my art. The quilt center is batik and tie-dyed by myself. Judith Meeker sewed it together using imported batik silks and it was quilted in Nashville, TN. The quilt is a joint collaboration of More Than Warmth and Peaceroots Alliance. It is being raffled as a fundraiser for Peaceroots, for a quilting machine and to support our billboard project...
