RHINO'S CURRENT FAVORITE WEBSITE: The Whalesong Project The Whalesong Project has announced its hydrophone is once again in the ocean and webcasting the live songs of the Hawaiian Humpback Whales, na mele o na kohola. Whalesong is a group of volunteers dedicated to inspiring stewardship of the oceans and the environment, and to helping "give a microphone" to important voices that may not be heard above the noise of the modern world. They believe the voices of the natural world, and of Hawaiian and other native cultures that have a connection with that world, carry inspiration and mana'o (wisdom) that can help carry humanity into the future in a more benevolent way. John Calley, a veteran Hollywood executive who was until last year Sony's chairman, will develop and produce it... ...Mr. Calley has worked with political material before, having shepherded "All the President's Men," the 1976 Watergate thriller, when he was an executive at Warner Brothers in the 1970's. He said Mr. Clarke's book would not be hard to turn into a feature film. "You could shoot the first 56 pages and have an extraordinary half of a movie, then it goes on to more enthralling stuff," he said. "If we were able to do `All the President's Men' with people meeting in garages and whispering in parks, then certainly with someone sitting at a table in the White House we could have a remarkable event." "Against All Enemies" and Mr. Clarke, who served in the last four administrations as a security and intelligence expert, have become hot topics in this election year. In the book he asserts that the Bush administration did not take sufficiently seriously his warnings of a growing threat from Al Qaeda in the months leading up to Sept. 11, focusing obsessively on Iraq, even after the attacks. Despite the Bush administration's vehement denials of the charges, the book has created a media firestorm, selling more than 300,000 copies in three weeks. Mr. Clarke's testimony to the commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks put pressure on the administration and was the main reason the national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice, agreed to testify on Thursday. The Emmy award winning "fake news show" covers each days news with a type of truthful perspective that can only come from irreverence. If you don't get the Comedy Central Network, The Daily Show alone is well worth the effort to change that. And if you have kids that are relying on The Daily Show for all their news, turn them on to "Footnote TV" which provide the dry details on each days show. http://www.newsaic.com/ftvdsindex.html AND FINALLY, RHINO'S BOTTOM LINE, RHINO'S FAVORITE BLOGETTE ...

A Mash Note to the Blogosphere by Arianna Huffington, Arianna Online, April 07, 2004 I've got a confession to make. I've got a big-time crush. I'm talking weak-in-the-knees infatuation. But it's not Brad or Orlando or Colin or any of the cinematic hunks du jour who have set my heart aflutter. No, it's Atrios and Kos and Josh Micah Marshall and Kausfiles and Kevin Drum and Wonkette. Bloggers all. Yes, when it comes to the blogosphere, I'm a regular cyberslut.... ...The vast majority of mainstream journalists head in the direction the assignment desk points them. This often means just following a candidate around, or sitting in the White House press room, and then rehashing the day's schedule for their readers or viewers. Bloggers are armed with a far more effective piece of access than a White House press credential: passion. When bloggers decide that something matters, they chomp down hard and refuse to let go. They're the true pit bulls of reporting. The only way to get them off a story is to cut off their heads (and even then you'll need to pry their jaws open). They almost all work alone, but, ironically, it's their collective effort that makes them so effective. They share their work freely, feed off one another's work, argue with each other, and add to the story dialectically. And because blogs are ongoing and daily, indeed sometimes hourly, bloggers will often start with a small story, or a piece of one - a contradictory quote, an unearthed document, a detail that doesn't add up - that the big outlets would deem too minor. But it's only minor until, well, it's not. Big media can't see the forest for the trees. Until it's assembled for them by the bloggers...
