QUOTE OF THE WEEKEND
There is a perverse form of contemporary violence to which the idealist fighting for peace by non-violent methods most easily succumbs: activism and overwork. The rush and pressure of modern life are a form perhaps the most common form, of its innate violence. To allow oneself to be carried away by a multitude of conflicting concerns, to surrender to too many demands, to commit oneself to too many projects, to want to help everyone in everything, is to succumb to violence. The frenzy of the activist neutralizes work for peace. It destroys the fruitfulness of work, because it kills the root of inner wisdom which makes work fruitful.
- -Thomas Merton ("Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander")

HOT BELTWAY GOSSIP:  Political Conversation: Condi's Slip
A pressing issue of dinner-party etiquette is vexing Washington, according to a story now making the D.C. rounds. How should you react when your guest, in this case national-security adviser Condoleezza Rice, makes a poignant faux pas? At a recent dinner party hosted by New York Times D.C. bureau chief Philip Taubman and his wife, Times reporter Felicity Barringer, and attended by Arthur Sulzberger Jr., Maureen Dowd, Steven Weisman, and Elisabeth Bumiller, Rice was reportedly overheard saying, "As I was telling my husb-" and then stopping herself abruptly, before saying, "As I was telling President Bush." Jaws dropped, but a guest says the slip by the unmarried politician, who spends weekends with the president and his wife, seemed more psychologically telling than incriminating. Nobody thinks Bush and Rice are actually an item. A National Security Council spokesman laughed and said, "No comment."

HOT HOLLYWOOD GOSSIP:  Cannes Picks Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 911"
Note From Michael Moore,  April 21, 2004
Friends,  I just got word that my new film, "Fahrenheit 911," has been selected by the Cannes Film Festival to premiere there in competition next month! This is only the second time in the last 48 years that a documentary has been chosen to be in the main competition (the first being "Bowling for Columbine" in 2002) -- and, in fact, another documentary has also been chosen for this year. The non-fiction film revolution rolls on! I am deeply honored by this announcement, considering it comes from our mortal enemy, the French. This year's jury in Cannes is headed by Quentin Tarantino and also includes director Jerry Schatzberg, Kathleen Turner, Tilda Swinton and others. "Fahrenheit 911" will be in theaters across the U.S. (and the rest of the world) this summer. More info, gossip and all the juicy details to follow... Thanks everyone for your support.

GOOD NEWS OF THE WEEK:  Judge Orders 'Air America' Back On Radio
A New York State Supreme Court justice ruled Thursday that the liberal talk-radio network, Air America Radio, be put back on the air in Chicago, a day after it was dropped there because of a contract dispute. Justice Marylin G. Diamond issued a restraining order that would allow Air America's programs to be switched on Friday. Air America must post a $156,000 bond, a condition that its chairman, Evan Cohen, said the company would meet.

BAD NEWS OF THE WEEK:  "NRA News.com'" To Start Broadcasts
The nation's gun lobby is creating an "NRA news" company that will produce a daily talk show for the Internet, buy a radio station and seek a television deal to spread its gun-rights message nationwide. Looking for the same legal recognition as mainstream news organizations, the National Rifle Association says it has already hired its first reporter, a conservative talk radio host from Oklahoma.

CARTOON STRIP OF THE WEEK:  "Doonesbury" Character Wounded In Iraq
Doonesbury took an alarming turn Monday, when it seemed that the character B.D., a former football star now serving in Iraq, might be dead or seriously wounded. Tuesday's comic strip shows he's alive, and Wednesday's reveals his injury - as well as the first look ever at perennially helmet-wearing B.D.'s hair. Creator Garry Trudeau "thought it was time" to look at the plight of the 4,000 wounded service people in Iraq, said Lee Salem, editor of Universal Press Syndicate, which distributes Trudeau's comic to 1,400 papers. "I'm simply trying to show what a grievous wound might mean to one soldier's life. B.D. will go to Germany, and then stateside for recovery and rehabilitation, a journey of healing I'll try to track in some detail," Trudeau said.

Subject: Teacher Arrested

At New York's Kennedy airport today, an individual later discovered to be a public school teacher was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a setsquare, a slide rule, and a calculator. At a morning press conference, Attorney general John Ashcroft said he believes the man is a member of the notorious al-gebra movement. He is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.

"Al-gebra is a fearsome cult," Ashcroft said. "They desire average solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in a search of absolute value. They use secret code names like 'x' and 'y'  and refer to themselves as 'unknowns', but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, 'there are 3 sides to every triangle'."

When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, "If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, he would have given us more fingers and toes."
