Dude, Where's My Movie Playing?

By Michael Moore, michaelmoore.com, June 18, 2004
We're a week away from the nationwide opening of Fahrenheit 9/11 and not a day goes by where we don't have some new battle to fight thanks to those who are still working overtime to keep people from seeing this film. What's their problem? Are they worried about something? A Republican PR firm has formed a fake grassroots front group called "Move America Forward" to harass and intimidate theater owners into not showing Fahrenheit 9/11. These are the same people who successfully badgered CBS into canceling the Reagan mini-series a few months ago. And they are spending a ton of money this week to threaten movie theaters who even think about showing our movie...

The Real Genius of Ray Charles
By Earl Ofari Hutchinson, Alternet, June 17, 2004
Charles was a symbol of the sheer power of innovative music to expose and overcome racial bigotry.     It was a fitting moment in 1986 when President Ronald Reagan honored Ray Charles at Washington's Kennedy Center as one of the top performing artists in America. Reagan and Charles -- the background of two American icons could not have been more dissimilar. Charles: black, blinded at an early age, fatherless, a high school drop out, Deep South born, battled and overcame a drug addiction, and Reagan: white, Northern born, middle class, rose to Hollywood stardom and the presidency, and battled Alzheimer's disease.

The two were linked in memory when Charles died the day before Reagan's state funeral. The link was forged even earlier when Charles sang "America the Beautiful" at the Republican National Convention in 1984. At the convention, Reagan got the bid for a second presidential run. But there was an even more important link. Charles smashed musical and racial barriers, and Reagan smashed political and ideological barriers that changed the shape of present day America...

This won't hurt much
Terry Jones, The Guardian, June 16, 2004

For some time now, I've been trying to find out where my son goes after choir practice. He simply refuses to tell me. He says it's no business of mine where he goes after choir practice and it's a free country.  Now it may be a free country, but if people start going just anywhere they like after choir practice, goodness knows whether we'll have a country left to be free. I mean, he might be going to anarchist meetings or Islamic study groups. How do I know?

The thing is, if people don't say where they're going after choir practice, this country is at risk. So I have been applying a certain amount of pressure on my son to tell me where he's going. To begin with I simply put a bag over his head and chained him to a radiator. But did that persuade him? Does the Pope eat kosher?  My wife had the gall to suggest that I might be going a bit too far. So I put a bag over her head and chained her to the radiator. But I still couldn't persuade my son to tell me where he goes after choir practice.
