FEATURED ARTICLES - Cheney Booed At Yankees Game, AMERICAblog - Broken promises To Veterans, by Thomas Oliphant , Boston Globe - Pentagon Plan to Utilize Troops from the Individual Ready Reserve, U.S. Newswire - Negroponte; Ambassador of Death: George Bush's Plan for Iraq, by Glen Yeadon, Indymedia.org QUOTE OF THE DAY "When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle. - - Edmund Burke KNOW YOUR HISTORY - JUNE 30th 1971 -- "I Am Not a Crook" Dick Nixon orders felony burglary of the Brookings Institute, where Daniel Ellsberg, Leslie Gelb & Morton Halperin worked. The Presidential order was made in a meeting with National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger, Defense Secretary Melvin Laird, Attorney General John Mitchell, Chief of Staff H.R.Haldeman & Chief Political Aid Charles Colson. Colson later proposed a firebombing. When this meeting was later revealed, future Nobel Peace Prize winner Henry Kissinger said of the meeting, "I have no such recollection." 1980 -- U.S. Supreme Court upholds $122 million judgment to the Lakota (Sioux) Nation for illegal taking of the Black Hills in South Dakota. Saying the hills are sacred & still not for sale, the Lakota Nation turns down the payment saying they still want the land back. RHINO HERE: Rhino thinks it impossible to overestimate the potential evil and suffering that will result from a shrub 2 administration. For those fellow progressives who insist voting for John Kerry this November is a cop out & a vote for the same ol' American Imperialism, Rhino sez, Ponder the likes of John Negroponte, and the esteem the shrub gang holds for him. John Kerry is the only person capable this year of defeating the shrub gang. Period. John Kerry can be spoken to & reasoned with by progressives. The shrub gang definitely can not. I offer you 2 pieces which speak to Kerry's concerns & actions in behalf of many unfortunate Americans who are trapped, or about to be snagged in the traps of the US Military. If you've seen "Fahrenheit 911" you saw the segment which follows the recruiters & you know how they prey on the least fortunate Americans. If only for the most vulnerable youth of America, getting rid of the shrubies is a must must do! And if that doesn't evoke your vote for Kerry, read today's RHINO'S BOTTOM LINE by Glen Yeadon which paints an ugly picture (not for the politically squeamish) of what these guys are capable of. The Rhino knows that changing the electoral system in the U.S. is of the utmost importance. The Rhino also knows that building a strong independent party is an integral part of that effort. But my fellow yearners for justice, this is not the year to make a statement. This is a year to focus on tossing these guys out of power. We can not afford otherwise. But first, a tale of Tuesday night: Cheney Booed At Yankees Game AMERICAblog, 6/29/04 ...During the 7th inning stretch at Yankees Stadium, they play God Bless America and show on the big screen pictures of anyone famous who's in the audience that night. Dick Cheney is apparently in the audience, and as soon as his face went up, the entire crowd started booing! ... Cheney, who visited both clubhouses after batting practice, watched part of the game from the box of Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and part from a first-row seat next to the Yankees dugout, where he sat between New York Gov. George Pataki and former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Cheney was booed when he was shown on the right-field videoboard during the seventh-inning. http://americablog.blogspot.com/archives/2004_06_27_americablog_archive.html#108855885723398761 "SEND THIS ARTICLE TO A REPUBLICAN!" Broken promises To Veterans by Thomas Oliphant , Boston Globe, 6/27/2004 NATURALLY, the political world's pulse quickened last week when John Kerry flew back here for a vote on a veterans' health care issue, only to be sandbagged by the Republican Senate leadership, which postponed the vote just long enough for him to miss it. What was missing from the brief dust-up was a discussion of the issue that produced Kerry's change in plans and the Republicans' childish maneuvering -- befitting a political culture that loves the politics of anything and ignores the substance of almost everything. As it turns out, the issue before the Senate has been before it -- and the House -- of Representatives several times and goes to the heart of the promise made to people who serve in the military that they will enter a health care system designed to provide the care they require. The truth is that the country breaks that promise every day, and indeed it is President Bush's intention to go on breaking it as far as the eye can see, just as it is his intention to let the government continue to save a few bucks by deducting veterans' disability payments from their military retirement benefits... MORE: http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/179/oped/Broken_promises_to_veterans+.shtml Statement from Kerry Advisor Rand Beers on Pentagon Plan to Utilize Troops from the Individual Ready Reserve U.S. Newswire, 6/29/04 Kerry National Security Advisor Rand Beers issued the following statement today: "Thousands of members of the military are learning through media reports that they may be involuntarily recalled to active duty. If true, this is troubling news and an unusual step to take. A few weeks ago, the Pentagon announced an expansion of the stop loss program, effectively forcing thousands of troops to extend their deployments. At the time, that move was called a back-door draft. Today that back-door swung wide open. The fact is that this involuntary call-up is a direct result of the Bush Administration's diplomatic failure to get real international help in Iraq. The situation on the ground in Iraq calls for more than a token training force from NATO. We need combat ready troops from NATO to stand side by side our men and women on the front lines." STRETCHED THIN: BUSH ADMINISTRATION TO USE IRS IN DESPERATE ATTEMPT TO RAISE MORE TROOPS Background Information on IRR Mobilization: Recently the Pentagon has announced plans to utilize troops from the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) a collection of hundreds of thousands of men and women who do not drill with a unit, and have no responsibilities other than to report their current address and contact information to the military, while they serve out the remainder of their term in the military. The IRR was last tapped in the First Gulf War, when 20,000 were mobilized. Thus far, approximately 2,000 IRR's have re-enlisted and most have done so voluntarily. However, the Pentagon has defined plans to involuntarily re-enlist 6,500 IRR's for the upcoming troop rotation in Iraq. In addition, they have announced plans to utilize the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to help track down thousands of soldiers in the IRR with bad contact info. Finally, and most importantly, many in the IRR have reported that through an Army memo and phone calls, they felt pressured to re-enlist in the reserves, or risk being involuntarily mobilized into a unit to be sent to Iraq or Afghanistan. Ambassador of Death, Right-Wing Death Squads, Drug Smuggling: George Bush's Plan for Iraq by Glen Yeadon, Indymedia.org, 6/22/04 ...Bush's appointment of John Negroponte as America's first ambassador to Iraq is grim news for Iraqis looking forward to freedom. Negroponte was Reagan's ambassador to Honduras who covered up the murders by right-wing death squads. This ambassador of death helped contribute to the genocidal terror waged by the Reagan administration in Central America. A report on the terror in Guatemala states: "In 626 massacres government forces completely exterminated Mayan communities, destroyed their dwellings, livestock and crops." Additional proof that Reagan was waging a genocidal war in Guatemala comes from the statement of a fundamental minister visiting the Reagan White House after his return from Guatemala: "The Army doesn't massacre the Indians. It massacres demons, and the Indians are demon possessed; they are communist." Negroponte will now be free to set up right-wing death squads in Iraq and will be helped by some of the worst thugs that South America has to offer. Blackwater USA, a military contractor has hired mercenaries from Chile for security duty in Iraq. Blackwater began recruiting in Chile in the fall of 2003 and the first group consisted mostly of former Chilean military members trained under the fascist regime of Pinochet. The military under Pinochet was responsible for torturing and murdering thousands of citizens during his regime...
