IN MEMORANDUM -  Pir Vilayat Khan
Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan, the renowned Sufi master and mystic, passed peacefully from this world Thursday, June 17th, 2004, at his home in Suresnes France, with his close family and a few of his close friends around him.  Pir Vilayat was one of the first Muslims in the modern era to bring a positive vision of Islam to the West, beginning in the late 1960's. The Sufi tradition he represented, with its origins in Pakistan, Iran, Iraq and Turkey, is the most intellectually open strand of Islam, as well as the most ecstatic, experiential one. Many people in the West know Sufism through the poetry and art of Rumi, and through the work of Pir Vilayat and his father, Pir Inayat Khan.

PONDERMENT: Scientists teleport information between atoms

LONDON - Two groups of physicists have teleported physical properties between atoms without using a physical link, a discovery they say could help develop ultrafast quantum computing technology. The teleportation was on a subatomic scale in the lab. The Austrian and American researchers were able to transfer the physical properties of an atom, such as its energy and spin. Until now, scientists had only been able to do this with laser beams. To do it, physicists first had to "entangle" two atoms, a phenomenon where a disturbance to one particle instantly affects the other, no matter how far away it is. Albert Einstein described it as a "spooky interaction."

Hollywood Golightly -  An interview with Hollywood eco-crusader Laurie David
by Amanda Griscom, Grist,  16 Jun 2004

(Excerpts)
...Those who are quick to snub Hollywood environmental activists as dabblers in eco-chic or peddlers of a pet cause would likely have a change of heart after shooting the breeze with Laurie David...

"...If the environmental movement wants to be mainstream, it has to lose its purer-than-thou, all-or-nothing attitude. It has to be pragmatic enough to bring everyone onboard. If perfection is the measure, we will fail to appeal to anyone but the fringe..."

"...consumerism is a -- if not the -- common denominator in this country.  So it's about time the environmental movement gets some marketing savvy. The old image of the environmentalist as this granola-eating tree hugger is over. It has to be over for the message to reach soccer moms and factory workers and anyone who drives a car or eats tuna."
