No White Chistmas for Rosemary this yearRosemary Clooney dies at 74. Rosemary Clooney, the crooner who costarred with Bing Crosby in ‘White Christmas,’ has died at the age of 74. [MSNBC] It has always been hard for me to reconcile the beautiful lady in "White Christmas" with the very LARGE lady in the moo-moo doing the paper towel commercials. Oh well, her voice was always beautiful. Fun with LinuxMandrake 8.2: 85% Icky Poo (that's Bad), IMHO. People I really respect have always told me good things about Mandrake. So in my current quest for an operating system that will support my ThinkPad since Windows 2K does not (see here), I picked up a copy of Mandrake 8.2. Rarely, if ever, has a Unix variant been so disappointing. I've now installed it 4 times and I can feel a 5th time coming on later today. [The FuzzyBlog!] It's interesting that Scott and I have been wrestling with Mandrake Linux at the same time. I just got a new desktop (Athalon XP 1800, 512ram, 60gig hd, great VGA card, fast CR-RW, etc.) One of the primary reasons I bought it was to learn about Linux (yes, I know I could have used an old slow box). My experience with Mandrake has been better than Scotts, so far. Yes, I did multiple reinstalls, but that was primarily in order to get the optimal dual-boot installation for Linux & WinXP. Since I know NOTHING about Linux, I had to learn about its partitioning scheme and then get things setup correctly for the dualboot. All is now working, even sound. Haven't tried DVD playback yet, Scott. My real complaint isn't Madrake, but Linux in general. It's very cool, works pretty good. But boy is it confusing. Way to geekish for the average Joe. It will be some time before it is real competition for Windows, in my estimation. I've looked at some of the pointers Scott has mentioned, mainly various desktops. I'm not sure that I could figure out how to install any of them. I haven't tried yet, but the instructions (or what seems to be passed off as instructions on Linux sites) are very intimidating. Oh, well. That's why I'm doing this, to learn.
