Wirelessly piping music throughout the house - I love having wireless Internet access. The next step is to actually network the computers so they can talk to one another, which should be easy but for some reason is just enough trouble that I keep blowing this project off. But then I see articles about things like Onkyo receiver with Ethernet capability built in and I start thinking that I need to figure out how to make the home network a reality. I've digitized pretty much all of my CD collection and put them on an external firewire hardrive. So now the question is how to access those MP3's and blast them through the house. Hmmmmm.

Spectrum, spectrum everywhere, and not a drop to drink - David Weinberger has put together an Open Spectrum FAQ, which is based on ideas and info from Dwayne Hendricks, David P. Reed, and Jock Gill. The Open Spectrum FAQ is an attempt to explain the issues about our precious airwaves in a way that non-techies can understand.
The FCC has historically regulated the airwaves as though they were a scarce commodity (this is tied to the sinking of the Titanic if you are Trivial Pursuit buff), because for years that was true. But advances in technology have made a bounty out of what used to be a scarcity. We need new assumptions about our spectrum, and a new vision about using it. Wireless Internet access is great, but what if it wasn't limited to your house? What if it was everywhere? Close your eyes and meditate on the implications of this. Or, better yet, go read the Open Spectrum FAQ.
