At least the yearly show of shows makes persons of PR feel a bit light headed. Here's a sig file from one of Mike DeMaria's favorite PR representatives (name withheld, of course):

Speaking of Mike, he's promised to send in some riveting show coverage this week direct from the Big Apple, so stay tuned.

Ok, so some readers are reporting an interesting byproduct of Friday's Mac OS X SmartUpdate security fix. Apparently, the update does away with those nagging updates that have been rendered inactive. As MacFixit poster Eric Patterson states:

"I installed the 7-12-02 Security Update for Mac OS X, and noticed afterwards that a previous software update that I had made inactive (Java 1.3.1 Update 1) was no longer available. In fact, Software Update now reports my system is 'up to date.' I wish I[base ']d checked the 'Inactive Updates' list before installing today[base ']s update."

I don't know about you, but I welcome anything that gets rid of my still unused Swedish, German, and Japanese language modules.

Remember that nifty backdoor exploit within Apple's Mac OS X? Obviously Apple saw the ironic potential in posting a security fix to its SmartUpdate software via SmartUpdate and has chosen instead to post a real-life AppleCare document. We can now download and repair with complete confidence.

Still, a digital signature would be nice...though I have to admit that the typical checksum will at least tell you if your download has been tampered with. In the immortal words of Jack Napier "Who do you trust! Hubba, hubba, hubba!"
