FM Radio will soon be introducing new writing surfaces that focus on creating and consuming valid XML formats line RSS and OPML. Ask not what the web can do for you but rather what can we do to make the promise of the web more achievable for each other.

Kendall Clark: "Even after five long years of XML development, the ideal and ubiquitous XML editor for humans seems more rumor than reality. Could it be that we have underestimated the difficulty of building a tool with which ordinary people can easily and simply create XML content?" That tool is impossible, because writers generally are not programmers, and don't think or write with metadata, even simple title-link-description two-level hierarchies like RSS. The closest thing to an XML editor that's widely deployed and popular are weblog editors like Radio, Blogger and Manila. Coming in second are outliners that support OPML. And most practical of all are apps that connect using XML invisibly, using SOAP or XML-RPC. [Scripting News]

From one messy desk to another, I salute you.

Success-Focused Reviewing.

Frequently, in our personal or professional lives, we review the outcomes of projects or activities. The common tendency is to consider these outcomes from a negative persepective, what went wrong rather that what went right. Next time you have to review something, try looking at its successful outcomes. At the very least, try balancing each negative consideration with a positive.

Negative/neutral question

Success-focused alternative

What went wrong?

What went right?

What are our needs?

What are our strengths?

What did we learn?

What did we learn to do better?

What issues should we put on the agenda?

What issues can be taken off the agenda?

How can we improve?

What strengths could we make more use of?

What's missing from this group?

What are the assets of this group?

What would you do differently next time?

What would you do the same next time?

What do you want to achieve?

What is your recipe for success, and how will you apply that?

Social Software Alliance is announced.

We are proud to announce the launch of the Social Software Alliance

The brainchild of the pioneers at SocialText the alliance is intended to be a place where the developers & users of social software can come together to create open standards, and, contribute industry best practices.  Our initial aims are:

  • aid discovery of developers working on synergistic projects and standards
  • assist in shaping open standards that mesh well with other alliance and Internet standards
  • help promote each standard to gain wider adoption

Quoting from the call for discussion:

"The fast-paced nature of the social software space now argues for developing light-weight, easy-to-implement standards, following the Internet tradition of rough consensus and running code, but perhaps moving faster than the larger standards bodies. It is expected that those standards promulgated by the alliance which become widely adopted will be proposed to the appropriate general standards body or bodies: W3C, IETF, ISO, etc. "

There will be a SocialText sponsored Happening tomorrow (see the site for more details) and we hope that anyone who is interested in the development of social software will come and get involved.

[Curiouser and curiouser!]
