One good thing resulted from my stupid Saturday Night Geocaching trip - I got some great moose photos. I bumped into a cow and twin calves as I hiked my way down the trail. I was extremely fortunate - the cow was very calm - not at all threatening.
Actually, I came across the cow first. As I crested a hill, I saw a very large moose in the middle of the trail about 100 feet from where I stood. I looked closely and noted that the moose was a cow. I was immediately on alert for a calf. I looked and peered everwhere - no calf. So, I waited for about 10 minutes as the moose browsed and finally moved far enough off the trail so I could slip by. She was very calm and just continued to munch as I carefully made my way past her. I went about another hundred feet, rounded a corned and bammo - two calves right in the middle of the trail.
Big Big Big Uh Oh!!!! There I was, the ol' slat rat, in about the worst position in nature - between a cow moose and her calves. Luckily for me, there just happened to be a fork in the trail right at that point, so I was able to duck off on to the fork and consider my options. But as I was standing there pondering my situation, the calves decided they were curious and started walking towards me. Augh!!!
At this point, Mom rounded her part of the trail and the calves immediately went to her instead of me. Whew...
I then started the waiting game. I waited for 20 minutes but those guys weren't going anywhere. So, I had to turn around and go all the way back - about 1/2 mile - to an earlier fork in the trail. This was when I should have bagged it and headed home. But no, I was stupid and continued on. sigh...
Anyhoo, here are the pics:
