I've been trying like mad for the past month to snag one of the very elusive 2005 White Jeep Geocaching Travel Bugs in the wild. Despite almost killing myself, I have not managed to grab one.
Yesterday was my latest attempt and the poor Ski Boy got drug along (since I'm no longer allowed to cache by myself in the deep woods). Last Wednesday, a white jeep showed up in the scenic 12.4 Mile cache along Eagle River. Due to work and illness, I wasn't even able to make a run at it until Sunday afternoon. Amazingly, the jeep was still listed as in the cache, so I whined at the Ski Boy, he acquiesed, and we hopped in Hubert and headed out to Eagle River - straight into the apocolypse.
As we approached Eagle River - the mountains turned black, the wind came up, and it started raining - cats and dogs, frogs - a real gully washer. Very unusual in Alaska. I watched the Ski Boy's face become grimmer by the minute. But he was a sport and hung in there - which was good because we could not find the trailhead/parking area. It's been my experience, that in geocaching, often the most difficult find is the parking area.
But after an hour of touring various Eagle River subdivisions, we finally found the (unmarked) trail head. From there it was a quick ten minute walk down a gorgeous trail to the River and the cache. The cache was a very easy find - but when I opened the ammo box - no white jeep. Foiled again. A cacher who had been there earlier in the day snagged it. sigh...
But the location was gorgeous - even in the rain:
Mile 12.4 along the river.

The Ski Boy in his yellow rain slicker headed back up the trail.
