Getting into the NYC subways in the morning when it’s just too crowded to move anywhere is akin to wading into water just slightly too deep for comfort. With no way to get a mooring, stuck in the middle of a roiling mass, you have to keep on your very toes to keep from going under, but there’s no way for you to go under because there’s no space for you to go under. A thoroughly depressing and uncomfortable situation, which is why I prefer to go really really early or really really late. Actually, I never get up early enough to go really really early.
