From All Things Considered, Tuesday, July 23, 2002

On this day 40 years ago, Europe and North America came face to face with each other in a new way -- via live television. American satellite technology for the first time enabled Europeans to see the United States and vice versa, in real time. Walter Cronkite was the host of that broadcast to the European continent. Today he tells us the story. (12:30)

This is an amazing account, narrated by one of the participants, of a stunning event in the history of communication and technology.  Cronkite's story is riveting.  Listen (RealAudio) and be amazed.
