There Were Four of Us

There were four of us when we were young: Jenny, Burt, Ben and me.

We played hide and seek. We climbed in apple trees. We cut paths thru the Pines. We tie-died shirts and sheets and pillow cases. We rode a minibike up Fern Hill. We built dams in the creek. We snuck out and peeked at the Christmas tree. We swam in the sun until our lips were blue.

There were four of us when we were young.

Tonite I spoke to each of them. First to Burt, who was driving home at that late hour and called to talk about summer. Then to Ben, who had a houseful of loud adventure and chaos making my life seem shockingly tame. And then to Jenny, who when asked if it was too late said, "Oh nooo, there's much to do yet," making me think that their three were only then settling down.

I spoke to each of them. And my adrenaline spiked. And my spirits soared. And a smile is stretching across my face from ear to ear. And it is highly unlikely I'll be able to sleep for quite some time, now, thanks to each of them.

Thanks indeed to each of them.
