Just The Other Day

Just the other day, under a blue Texas sky, before a trellis of Coral Honeysuckle, he stood with a smile on his face and waved at me.

And just the other day, under that same sky, before the city skyline, he stood there looking at me with that same smile on his face.

And I wonder where he will be tomorrow, and whether or not the sky will be blue.

It's true, what they say, that they grow up fast. It's true, because it really was just the other day.

The Last Concert

Four bands sat on the stage one after another under bright lights that made the brass shine. Parents sat in the audience and watched and listened. Siblings squirmed. Cameras flashed. The crowd clapped and cheered and whistled.

They played a piece that made us laugh. They played a piece that made me struggle to hide my tears. And after the last band played, the seniors all gathered at the front of the stage.

They stood in a line and held hands and raised their arms into the air with broad smiles on their faces. And they sang while the underclassmen behind them played the school song.

And that was it. The music stopped, and now his last concert is over.

And we come at last to that light at the end of the tunnel. And although the tears run down our cheeks, just look at their smiles! And look at the light in their eyes! And listen to their beating hearts, standing under the lights beside each other hand in hand singing, every one of them. At the end of a journey. About to start another one.
