Prom

There was a limo involved, at a cost that dwarfed all the others. And there was a dinner reservation scheduled shockingly close to the start of the prom.

A number of kids went without dates, which is actually very cool. Although interestingly enough, there were corsages and boutonniers exchanged even between kids who didn't have formal dates -- a small piece of the old tradition that evidently still remains.

They were dressed up snazzier than most of them had ever been so that they had trouble recognizing each other at first. And they looked mighty fine.

The mental picture I got from the report several days later was one of a mob on the floor dancing to the DJs tunes as one large group, which is also very cool. And there were evidently many who sat at tables the whole time.

The boy said he never sat down, although truth be told, they arrived late and left early, so there wasn't much time to do anything.

He did find his nominal date who had come with a different group, and he gave her her wrist corsage. But the two of them never danced, preferring instead to hang out in different crowds. And at the end of the evening, a few of the boys played electronic games until just before the sun came up.

Not exactly prom night as I remember it.

But then, I didn't go my senior year. And he just did.
